Overtake! Anime Is Over, but Was It Enough?

Don't you think Haruka's story got a little crumpled?

Overtake! spoilers ahead!

Summary:

  • Overtake! will be remembered by sports anime fans for a long time.
  • The main thing about Overtake! is the drama.
  • Many felt that the anime's ending was a bit fast.

The final episode of Overtake! was recently released. Most fans are thrilled and call it one of the fall season's brightest novelties. But there are those who didn't get enough character revelation. One thing is for sure, Overtake! will be remembered by sports anime fans for a long time, but why? What does this show have to offer and what can we say about the ending?

Sport isn't the only thing that matters

Perhaps Overtake!’s strongest element is its plot and characters. The story centers on middle-aged photographer Kouya Madoka and young, ambitious racer Haruka Asahina. Kouya is in a creative crisis. A few years ago, a catastrophic event prevented him from taking photographs, and his life has become a failure. But everything changes when he meets Haruka. The boy shows the photographer a serious and responsible attitude to work. Inspired by his example, Kouya changes his life.

The characters complement each other perfectly — youthful maximalism is balanced by the hard life experience of a mature man. Although racing plays an important role in the story (Haruka participates in the F4 race and Kouya helps him win), it is not the central plot element. The main thing about Overtake! is the drama. If this anime didn't have well-written tragic stories of the main and supporting characters, it would lose all its charm. Not surprisingly, the most popular episode is the one that is not about racing, but about revealing Kouya's past.

Recently, Episode 12 was released and we saw the end of Kouya and Haruka's story. There are no plans for a second season, and there seems to be no need for one (there are no open questions left in the story). Kouya was able to overcome himself, healed his injury and started taking pictures again. Haruka achieved his goal and won the race to honor his father. He also became kinder and more open to others and learned to accept help. The secondary characters' stories ended logically — Tokumaru Toshiki realized his mistakes and stopped chasing victory at all costs, Harunaga Satsuki coped with the injury and moved on.

Still, many felt that the anime's ending was a bit stilted. The final race took up only one episode, and the aftermath was not shown. In this regard, fans wondered how well Haruka's line was presented. After all, the main theme of the last few episodes was Kouya's story, with his character undergoing a transformation up until the finale.

Haruka's development reaches its climax in Episode 6. The finale doesn't belong to the racer at all, although there is a lot of him in it. However, this decision can be easily explained — Haruka is the central figure that connects all the other characters. His story and development are reflected in other stories and can easily be overlooked.
