Why does it hurt so much?

Overtake! spoilers ahead!

Summary:

  • You can find Overtake! among the hidden gems of the season.
  • Overtake! is primarily striking for its drama.
  • Fans call Episode 9 the most traumatic in recent times.

Overtake! is one of the fall season's hidden gems. Despite a compelling story and quality production, it couldn't compete with the big releases, including Frieren: Beyond Journey's End (Sousou no Frieren) and The Apothecary Diaries (Kusuriya no Hitorigoto). Nevertheless, Overtake! is definitely worth watching. An ordinary looking sports anime about racing turns out to be a very emotional story.

Race is important, but not as much

Although racing is a big part of Overtake!, it's not the main entertainment. MF Ghost, the other season newcomer, also about racing, devotes more screen time to races (too much!). Overtake! stands out for its drama. It is the story of a failed photographer, Kouya Madoka, who has lost his taste for life, and a teenager, Haruka Asahina, whose determination and dedication gradually bring back Kouya's desire to take photos.

Sure, the plot of this anime might not seem that thrilling, but it's not just about a creative crisis and high ambition to win. It's about broken people trying to move forward despite all the challenges. Kouya finds support in Haruka, and the F4 races the boy is involved in bring out an interest the photographer hasn't had in years. The inexperienced Haruka sees Kouya as the father he lost as a child. Kouya helps the young racer realize his dream of honoring his dead parent.

We've seen it before, but now it's obvious that Overtake! is a very emotional anime. The last episodes have proven this. Fans even call Episode 9 the most traumatic in recent memory. Viewers finally saw the reason for Kouya's life crisis. The backstory of his work in a small town where the tsunami happened was shown, and the identity of the girl in the ill-fated photo was revealed.

Although the characters seem to get through this difficult phase, the anime didn't move towards a good ending in which Haruka would fulfill his dream. It looked like the boy would win the race shown in Episode 10, but he lost and once again the creators took the viewers on an emotional ride.

Not only does the main characters' story look so sad. There aren't many side characters here, and they are relatively well-drawn. Tokumaru Toshiki fights his fears and faces new challenges every time. Harunaga Satsuki being the best gets into an accident and becomes redundant.

There are actually a lot of sad moments in this anime. Even though there is only one episode left, it seems that it can still touch the viewers.
