Psycho-Pass S3 Doesn't Have a Dub Yet: When Will It Get One?

Psycho-Pass S3 Doesn't Have a Dub Yet: When Will It Get One?

The situation with the licensors is very confusing.

Summary:

  • Psycho-Pass used to be considered one of the best dystopian anime, but that reputation was ruined by a subpar sequel.
  • Now, it’s so unpopular that S3 doesn’t even have a dub.
  • Due to licensing issues, it might never get one.

When Psycho-Pass was originally released, it instantly entered the “modern classic” status. It’s an actually good dystopian series, written by Gen Urobuchi, one of the most critically acclaimed anime writers (famous for Fate/Zero, among other things).

However, the sequels to Psycho-Pass didn’t hold up to the reputation of the original. It actually was the opposite: they were incredibly disappointing. Still, many fans stuck with the anime. Now, however, it’s hardly relevant: in fact, Season 3 can’t even be watched dubbed.

Why the Franchise Lost Relevance

Compared to S1 of Psycho-Pass, the second season was incredibly disappointing. Not only was it a completely different storyline that felt like a filler, it also wasn’t as thought-provoking as the original. Because of that, many fans dismiss Season 2 entirely.

The movie that came after S2 was better, but by that time, many otaku already stopped caring about the franchise. The franchise released more movies — Sinners of the System trilogy — and then S3, but at that point, many didn’t even know these sequels existed. The format of S3 — 8 double-length episodes — didn’t help either.

The franchise is still releasing content, too. Psycho-Pass Movie: Providence is a prequel to S3 that came out last year, and S3 itself had a 3-episode sequel in 2020. However, they are so unpopular that S3 doesn’t even have a dub.

It Probably Won’t Get Dubbed

The first two seasons of Psycho-Pass were dubbed. The third, however, wasn’t — so, if you were watching the franchise dubbed, you’d have no choice but to switch to subs for that entry. That makes fans unhappy, and they are questioning why there’s no dub and when they can finally get one.

Unfortunately for Psycho-Pass watchers, no one can provide the answer for that, and the situation is very complicated. Most of the series has been on Crunchyroll, but not S3, which was licensed by Prime and only hit Crunchyroll very recently.

As such, the license holder is different in the US, and they might not allow the series to be dubbed at all. This is even more complicated by the fact that the Providence movie does have a dub, as it was licensed by Crunchyroll first.

Ultimately, while Psycho-Pass S3 might get a dub in the future, most fans don’t bet on it. Not that they care much, though: the first season is good enough by itself, and you don’t need to watch the sequels. S3 is at least better than S2, but still not really close to the greatness of the first season.
