Ep.8 has a tiny hint, which suggests that the world of Ragna Crimson is our world after an apocalypse.
The hint is the globe in Crimson’s hideaway. It’s obviously the globe of our planet.
In addition to that, Crimson has a flashback to what looks like nuclear war. It implies that dragons existed before the apocalypse.
Hidden Clue
In Episode 8, right after Crimson realizes that Ultimatia is not about to spend all her mana despite him organizing a series of explosions, he goes to his hide-away together with Ragna. When they enter the room, there is a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment when a projection of a globe is shown, and the globe is obviously a depiction of Earth. Fan reaction was immediate. Seeing the proof of something they had been suspecting for some time is a wonderful experience!
Indeed, some anime-onlys have theorized that Ragna Crimson world was a post-apocalyptic Earth for a while. They talk about the Lese Kingdom looking like Iberian Peninsula, about Crimson having access to high-tech weaponry, and of course, about the globe.
By now, fans are certain that the world of Ragna Crimson is a post-apocalyptic Earth that is still recovering from whatever caused the apocalypse. That would explain the medieval look of most of the anime; it looks like surviving humans had to start from the beginning.
Why an Apocalypse?
It’s not entirely clear what caused the apocalypse and how it was connected to dragons. However, Episode 8 also shows Crimson’s memory, in which an atomic bomb seems to be detonated. A nuclear war is as good as any reason for the end of the world, so for the time being, we will assume that it is the cause of the apocalypse in Ragna Crimson.
As for dragons, despite the bomb falling quite close to Crimson and his mysterious companion, the two do not run for cover. Crimson’s eyes also seem unusual in that memory, which implies that dragons existed before the end of the world. Could they have caused it? Possibly, but we do not have enough clues for that just yet.
Episode 8, therefore, confirmed a lot of fan speculation while giving us more hints about the things that happened to Ragna Crimson’s version of Earth. We are looking forward to more clues for more speculation! As for people who have read the source material, we hope our search for the answers that they know amuses them as well.
