Rinkai! is a project meant to celebrate women's cycling. It involves two types of media: a manga, which will start its run in 2024, and an anime that will premiere in 2024. The characters all come from different Japanese prefectures, and their surnames are references to Japanese cities that have velodromes.

Anime about cycling is not very common. Although Yowamushi Pedal is a huge title with an ongoing manga and multiple adaptations, it is basically the only one that is well-known, and it does not focus on women’s cycling. Rinkai! will hopefully be the women’s cycling project that we never knew we needed.

The official website of the project has a section with character profiles, and that is how we know who is on the new key visual.

The Visual and Fan Reactions

The visual features Izumi Ito from Shizuoka Prefecture and Nana Hiratsuka from Kanagawa Prefecture. According to the website, Izumi picked up cycling just because she likes it, and Nana is more competitive. Also, Nana’s father is a cyclist as well.

Fans have different reactions depending on their understanding of cycling. Some tried to figure out what exact type of cycling the anime would be dedicated to based on the type of the bike in the visual. There is an easier way to learn that it’s keirin: through the project’s website. Indeed, Rinkai! focuses on women’s keirin.

Are you a cyclist?

Keirin has cyclists start behind a pacer for several laps before being allowed to race against each other. Since 2000, it has been an Olympic sport, but in Japan, it is also a very important betting sport.

Women’s keirin became a thing in Japan in 1949, but in 1964, women were banned from competing. In 2012, women and girls were allowed to play this sport again, which is what Rinkai! is supposed to celebrate.

When not investigating the type of bike on the visual, fans seem happy to learn that Rinkai! anime and manga are coming next year. They agree that there is too little content on cycling in general, nevermind women’s cycling. Viewers anticipate a serious mixed-media product that will help them learn more about women’s keirin in Japan, as well as the velodromes in various prefectures.

With its unusual premise and execution, we hope that the Rinkai! project does well.
