Rurouni Kenshin Remake S2 Airs in Fall 2024, and Fans Hope It Gets Better

Rurouni Kenshin Remake S2 Airs in Fall 2024, and Fans Hope It Gets Better

The first one was kind of disappointing.

Summary:

  • The second season of the Rurouni Kenshin remake will air this fall.
  • The original anime had a lot of fillers, but was fine otherwise.
  • The remake was criticized for its subpar animation, and fans hope it will get better.

The remake of Rurouni Kenshin: Meiji Kenkaku Romantan has been somewhat controversial among anime fans. Older fans were curious about it, but not exactly happy — the original series was perfectly fine in their book, outside of the abundance of fillers. And newer fans never really cared about the franchise at all.

The first season of the remake got mixed reception from fans — and ended with an announcement of a continuation. Well, we’re actually getting the sequel in Fall 2024, and fans pray it improves upon the mistakes of the first season of this remake.

Why does this remake exist in the first place?

To be fair, it’s understandable why the remake exists. The original series is quite old — released in the 90s — and fans barely talk about the anime anymore. That said, the manga is still very much known, and the live action films were very popular.

The old anime also had some problems — the most noticeable being that it changed some of the manga storylines (albeit some fans feel it actually improved them) and added a lot of filler episodes.

What’s wrong with the remake?

Fans liked the original series even despite the issues it had. That’s why they were initially wary about the remake: it just wouldn’t have the same atmosphere as the original.

Unfortunately, their concerns were true: the remake was praised for actually following the manga (and even including side stories), but everything else was… subpar.

The animation of the remake was barely passable. The original wasn’t the best-looking thing ever, but it had its moments. The action in the remake has no weight, and the entire series looks too glossy.

Fans really hope it improves the visual presentation, as even if it adapts the manga properly, it’s just not fun to watch when it doesn’t look good.

The second season of the Rurouni Kenshin remake will adapt the Kyoto Arc, which is by far the most beloved part of the series.

It’s often considered one of the best arcs in battle shounen manga, and the old anime actually adapted it amazingly. It will be hard to match that, but fans hope the remake gets better.

Season 2 is airing this fall and is scheduled for two cours. However, some fans feel that three cours would have been better: that’s how much the original series took to cover that material. In the end, only time will tell how the new anime actually handles it
