The anime was well-received
The anime was praised for its unique take on the genre. Despite the protagonist, Tanya, engaging in many violent military operations, the series was extremely fun to watch. Aoi Yuuki’s performance as Tanya added more charm to the character. Fans can’t help but love her, despite her being so obviously evil (it’s even in the name).
One issue of the anime was that it desperately needed a sequel. The original series had only 12 episodes. Thankfully, only a year after the anime ended, it was announced to get a sequel… in the form of a movie.
Why movie sequels are bad
Movie sequels are generally controversial among fans. While movies usually have much higher production values, the fact that they’re limited to theaters often makes fans unhappy. After all, they’d have to wait even longer for the film to actually come out on Blu-Ray or online streaming.
Moreover, movie sequels are somewhat disliked because they often mean the death of the series. It’s hard to make new sequels after a movie which many fans would have missed out on due to its limited release.
Where’s the Season 2?
However, Saga of Tanya the Evil did get a further sequel announcement. Back in 2021, the anime was announced to get a sequel season. The cast and the staff were going to remain the same, and a key visual was revealed — along with a short special to commemorate the occasion.
Almost three years later, we still have no news on the sequel season. This makes fans worried that the project is canned. While that’s unlikely — the series is way too popular for that — many guess that it is on hold or perhaps in production hell.
Studio Nut, responsible for the anime, is quite a small establishment, and they might not have much resources to work with. We don’t have any concrete information on the series, but it’s unlikely to release until Fall 2024 — and even that date is very dubious.
