Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin is a game that was announced to get an anime adaptation.
Usually, fans don’t get excited about game adaptations.
The anime will be produced by P.A. Works — almost certainly meaning great animation — and will probably feature many slice-of-life elements.
Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin has been announced to receive an anime adaptation. Haven’t heard of it? No wonder. The source material isn’t a manga or even a light novel: it’s actually a game which mixes multiple genres. The fact that it is getting an adaptation makes fans generally happy — because it seems the anime is in good hands.
What is it about?
Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin follows an exiled goddess, Sakuna, who has to grow rice fields for a human village. The gameplay combines elements of an RPG, a platformer and a farming simulator. While it may not seem like something that would make a good anime, fans are actually convinced that it will work.
In part, the reason for this is the premise being very absurd. The game provides a very unusual take on Japanese mythology, and the whole setup is just funny. That said, a lot of the gameplay parts can’t be adapted into an anime, but they won’t need to be: the anime can just focus on the plot.
Fans aren’t usually this excited about game adaptations
Game adaptations don’t have a very good reputation in the anime community, and there’s a good reason for that. It’s very hard to reimagine gameplay as an actual anime with no interactive elements. At least visual novels are branching stories with multiple routes, and even those are usually critically panned by fans.
It’s not that there aren’t any successful game adaptations. In recent years, Princess Connect! Re:Dive and Uma Musume: Pretty Derby were very well-received by fans. A lot of the popularity for both, however, came from their animation being incredible.
Many will watch it just because of the studio
The animation is the least of the concerns when it comes to Sakuna. After all, the anime will be produced by P.A. Works — a studio which is famous for their high production values.
They also have a certain visual flavor to them which attracts a lot of dedicated fans, who will watch the anime even if they weren’t outright interested in the premise or the source material.
Many fans actually feel that Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin is a perfect fit for P.A. Works. It is a fantasy series with a unique premise that has a lot of slice-of-life elements — many of their previous works could also be described like this.
It’s hard to speculate on anything outside of this, but at least, it seems like it will be decently popular.
