Seven Deadly Sins: Four Knights of the Apocalypse Reveals a New Trailer: Fans Are Cautiously Optimistic

Finally, this series is getting an official release in the West.

Summary:

  • Four Knights of the Apocalypse has been airing since October, but lacked official English subs or a dub.
  • It’s an adaptation of a sequel manga to SDS.
  • The trailer was mostly well-received.

The Seven Deadly Sins: Four Knights of the Apocalypse (Nanatsu no Taizai: Mokushiroku no Yonkishi) has been airing since October, but with no official release in the West, it flew under the radar of the majority of its target audience there. However, Netflix finally announced they are going to pick it up, revealing a new trailer, which states that the episodes would be available one week early, starting one January 31, 2024. The series’ fans are quite happy about this announcement, and understandably so.

SDS is not over yet?

Technically, the main storyline of The Seven Deadly Sins has already ended with Season 4, Dragon's Judgement (Funnu no Shinpan). However, this anime doesn’t adapt the story of the original manga, but rather its sequel, Four Knights of The Apocalypse. Set 16 years after the end of the original series, it mostly follows a new cast of characters, some of which are children of the heroes of The Seven Deadly Sins. So yes, you can actually watch this one without watching the original, if you want.

With how poorly the last two seasons of The Seven Deadly Sins were received, and the generally mixed reviews for the latter arcs of the manga, it might be surprising to some that the franchise is still pumping out content. Make no mistake, though: it is still a very popular series, and so the adaptation of the sequel manga was expected at some point. It’s a little surprising Netflix didn’t announce picking it up earlier, but it’s better late than never. Scheduled to have two cours, Four Knights of the Apocalypse is an adaptation of a still ongoing manga, so we might even get more seasons announced in the future.

Reception

The reception of the trailer is more on the positive side. Fans are praising the visual quality, which is noticeably better than that of the last 2 seasons of the original anime, as well as than the two CGI specials that were released in the past year. Some are also optimistic about it essentially being a fresh start for the series, as they were dissatisfied with the last arcs of the original series. There are concerns, however, about how good overall the series is going to be, as well as complaints about Netflix not licensing it earlier. Will it be as good as the earlier seasons of the original? Who knows, but it’s surely worth checking out.
