In Shy, Pepesha looks like a stereotype and Davie seems to be very similar to David Bowie, which is just the sort of chaos we are looking for.
Shy has multiple heroes and a Unilord watching over them. As it is an ongoing anime, we're currently familiar with only three heroes: Teru or Shy herself from Japan, Pepesha or Spirit from Russia, and Davie Wonder John or Stardust from Great Britain.
To be fair, it is a little presumptuous to claim that we know them, but we know some things, and we can discuss them.
Beware the spoilers, especially if you have not seen Episode 3 yet.
Pepesha's Name Is a Historical Easter Egg
Pepesha is a Russian hero, which you can tell easily since she is always drinking vodka. In fact, her hero name, Spirit, can be understood as referencing alcohol. She also wears a large fur collar and occasionally a fur hat, which is also probably a stereotype since Russia is considered cold, and it often is, but Pepesha would feel rather uncomfortable in a fur anything in Japan, where we usually see her.
Interestingly, the name Pepesha does not seem to be common in Russia. After a bit of digging, we can tell that it is actually the name of a gun that Russia used in World War II. Which is a very interesting decision, especially given that Pepesha does not seem old enough to remember WWII.
Despite all the stereotyping and unusual decisions on naming her, Pepesha is clearly a nice woman. She helps out Shy repeatedly, cheering her up and helping her deal with her shyness.
The Bowie Lookalike We Didn't Know We Needed
Davie Wonder John, on the other hand, is labeled a psychopath, or if we are being more generous, a man capable of making hard decisions.
For example, he cut off his friend's finger when said friend received a strange ring from the current antagonist, which turned him into a monstrous and suffering creature. Davie is also the one to raise the stakes of the training fight between him and Shy; he is capable of rather harsh decisions.
As for his design, he is basically David Bowie. He looks like David Bowie, he is also a rock star, and he even calls himself Stardust, which is a direct reference to Ziggy Stardust, Bowie's alter ego he used on the scene. This decision can make a lot of fans of David Bowie happy or unhappy depending on whether Stardust is well-written.
In summary, the Russian hero is a bit stereotypical, but she seems like a nice woman, who likes and cares for Shy. On the other hand, the British hero seems to have fewer stereotypes, and his whole design is a nod to David Bowie, which a lot of people will appreciate. We hope to meet the rest of the heroes soon, to discuss their design and choices.
