The Imaginary
While The Imaginary was supposed to be released in summer 2022, the movie has been postponed to 15 December 2023. It is created by Studio Ponoc, headed by Yoshiaki Nishimura, formerly from Studio Ghibli. The Imaginary is the studio’s third movie after Mary and the Witch's Flower (Mary to Majo no Hana) and Modest Heroes (Chiisana Eiyuu: Kani to Tamago to Toumei Ningen), so the studio is rather new and still needs to establish itself.
The Imaginary is based on a 2014 novel by A.F. Harrold; both the movie and the novel share the same name. It’s a story about imagination, specifically about an imaginary boy, Rudger, who was created by a girl named Amanda. Imaginaries have one fate: to be forgotten and dissolved. Fortunately, there is a secret city where the forgotten imaginaries find refuge. The anime uses hand-drawn animation, which the fans greatly approve, judging by their reactions to the trailer.
The Trailer
The trailer uses its ninety seconds to tease the plot and show animation and the main theme. The viewers are acquainted with Rudger, learn that the imaginaries can be dissolved after being forgotten, and the city of the imaginaries is also shown.
Fans like the animation shown in the trailer, and they also say that the story itself reminds them of Studio Ghibli. That makes sense given the studio’s origins. On that note, fans seem to be invested in the movie doing well because they want Studio Ponoc to make it in the industry.
Some concerns are also voiced, especially regarding the use of CGI. Fans are not sure it will work well with the animation that, indeed, looks very much like that of Studio Ghibli.
Overall, though, the trailer was received well, and fans are looking forward to the movie. Let’s hope that The Imaginary turns out great and allows Studio Ponoc to survive in the competitive animation industry.
