Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online confirmed Season 2.
Fans are worried S2 will be worse because the main story has already concluded.
Some argue that the second season is going to be fine — fans just want to see the characters again.
Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online is a spin-off for the original series. It takes place within the Gun Gale Online (GGO) game, which is the main setting for the first arc of Sword Art Online II. Despite that, it follows a completely new cast of characters, only referencing the main series a couple of times.
When the spin-off originally came out in 2018, it was mostly praised. With the main series being pretty controversial, Alternative was seen as a change of tone. While the anime did have a serious plot, it was mostly about gaming in virtual reality — and fans praised it for its different approach.
A new season was announced last year. It is already confirmed to air in 2024, but fans aren’t exactly happy.
Why are fans worried about this announcement?
At first glance, it seems odd that fans are unhappy about a new season of SAO Alternative. Well, unhappy isn’t the right word: they will definitely watch it, and they do want to see the characters again. The issue with it getting a sequel is completely different.
The first season of SAO Alternative was, essentially, a finished story. It’s hard to imagine where the anime can go from there, and so, fans are naturally wary about the continuation.
There have been multiple examples of sequels that were worse because they had nothing to do with the old plot since it had already concluded. People argue that the second arc of SAO S1 was like that, for example.
The issue becomes even worse when you realize that the light novels have been going on for a while despite supposedly ending. In fact, Volume 9 was said to be planned as the final one in the afterword, only for them to continue anyway. Fans wonder if this might mean that the latter arcs are worse than the first ones.
It’s probably not that bad
That said, the announcement is still somewhat of a surprise — and many argue it’s not as bad. After all, more adventures of LLENN will always be fun to watch, and a lot of those who didn’t like SAO originally found themselves enjoying Alternative because of the cast being completely different.
It is way too early to judge the series, especially because we don’t know much about it. People are still going to watch it, and more Sword Art Online content is always welcome
