Tearmoon Empire’s OP is Perfect for Its Anime (and Yes, Guillotine-kun Stole Our Hearts, Too)

How to make the perfect opening for your comedy anime about a girl trying to escape brutal death in front of a cheering mob? Why, there should definitely be a sentient guillotine!

Summary

  • Fans love Tearmoon Empire’s opening. Several episodes in, and we are still blown away by how good it is!
  • There is a lot to love in the OP, from cute Mia to cute sentient guillotine.
  • The OP also conveys the key information about the plot. It’s both cute and useful!

Mia Luna Tearmoon

Tearmoon Empire (Tearmoon Teikoku Monogatari: Dantoudai kara Hajimaru, Hime no Tensei Gyakuten Story) is a comedy show about Mia, who somehow returned to the past after being executed in the future. Knowing that guillotine is waiting, Mia tries to change things she does to survive this time around.

Mia is not a role model, to put it lightly, but when she returned in time, she became twelve, so at the very least, she is cute! With the anime trying to make people sympathize with her despite her flaws, that cuteness is her main selling point. As a result, the OP is very, very cute.

Cute OP

Everything — and we do mean everything — about the OP is cute. The song is catchy, and it is sung in-character with a lot of “desu wa” in it for extra cuteness. Mia’s expressions are very cute, to the point where the animators had to dedicate a few seconds to them. Mia herself is exceptionally cute, and none of the other characters can compete with her in cuteness, except for possibly one of them — Guillotine-kun.

Guillotine-kun

Guillotine-kun is loved by the fanbase. When you are creating a comedy anime where the main character tries to escape the guillotine, you might think that reminding viewers about it might sour the mood. But not in this case! Cartoonish Guillotine-kun appears throughout the OP and even in the series, and never once does it spoil the mood. Possibly, Guillotine-kun is just too cute for viewers to dislike.

Useful Information

Aside from the cuteness overload, the OP explains the premise of the anime. It even seems to imply that Mia’s plan will work out! Panels that are clearly meant to illustrate the revolution are substituted by more peaceful panels, for example. That gives us hope that Mia will survive and become a better person.

The OP is useful and cute! What else could you hope for? Nothing, and that makes the OP perfect!
