Since Season 2 Part 1, werewolves were shown to work for Philomela’s Grandmother Lizbeth.
In Season 2 Part 2 Episode 3, we learn that Lizbeth did something to them, making them follow her orders.
Lizbeth also kept werewolves’ children away while apparently experimenting on them.
Lizbeth remarks on werewolves’ powerful healing abilities. Perhaps, she chose them since they could survive her methods.
Since Episode 3, we know that the werewolves did as Lizbeth wanted because she did something to them. Some sort of spell held them under Lizbeth’s control, but if that was not enough, Lizbeth also kept their pups away. It is heavily implied that she experimented on the pups, too. Let’s discuss it — as if we do not have enough reasons to hate Lizbeth already!
Lizbeth and the Werewolves
Episode 2 shows that a werewolf couple was kidnapped together with their children. It is not clear if it was Lizbeth who did it; there seemed to be more parties involved, and the attackers did not look like Lizbeth’s usual goons. However, the couple is clearly given to Lizbeth, and she is allowed to do whatever she wants to them.
So she does; it is not specified what she did exactly, but she does comment in Episode 3 that she left the werewolves only basic self-awareness. It was only so that they could take care of themselves while doing Lizbeth’s dirty work. And if for whatever reason they did not manage to obey, Lizbeth kept their pups hostage.
Poor Pups
It is heavily implied that Lizbeth has done something horrible to the pups. In Episode 11, Zaccheroni is confronted by something werewolf-shaped with its face covered by some sort of cloth. We assume that it is the pup, and the poor thing might still be under Lizbeth’s control. The werewolf mother turned against Lizbeth due to Zoe shattering the curse that made her obey, but nothing like that happened to the pup yet. We hope that Zaccheroni recognizes the pup for what it is — a child — and does not hurt it.
Possible Reasons
We wonder why Lizbeth wanted to get herself some werewolves. It might be a situation that is similar to Gorgons, who are hunted for their valuable organs. In this case, the werewolves’ stamina and ability to regenerate could be the reason for their capture. At the very least, Lizbeth claimed that it was the only reason the mother werewolf survived what Lizbeth had done to her.
As for the way Lizbeth acquired werewolves, we do not believe that it was anything remotely legal. We know that the magical world is fine with auctioning people off — we saw that with Chise when she was bought by Elias. The werewolf situation does not look like it was a similar purchase, especially since no contracts were signed by the werewolves themselves. That said, of course, werewolves might not be considered people, in which case the picture is all the more bleak.
What she did to the werewolves is another reason to hate Lizbeth, and we have not even seen yet the results of her experimentation on the pups. Lizbeth is truly impossible to forgive.
Philomela’s grandmother clearly hurt them, but why? And what happened to their children?
