The Ancient Magus' Bride’s Ultimate Lesson: Don’t Mess With Mages (Messing With Sorcerers is Okay)

The Ancient Magus' Bride has its own classification for magic. And while not all mages are overpowered, how do you know that the one you are messing with is not?

The Ancient Magus’ Bride (Mahou Tsukai no Yome) spoilers ahead!

Summary

  • In Ep.7, Elias tells the Headmistress that mages and sorcerers are not the same.
  • In The Ancient Magus' Bride, sorcerers use their own magical reserves, but mages use the magic outside of them and often have a familiar or make agreements with Fae.
  • Mages are not necessarily overpowered, but depending on their agreements, they can be.
  • Sorcerers are more constrained in their abilities.

One of the main lessons we learn in The Ancient Magus' Bride: do not mess with mages. Mages are different from sorcerers, you see, and between those two, mages are definitely someone you want on your side.

The Ancient Magus' Bride has its own lore that makes the world in it feel deep and interesting. There are some rules by which this world works. It defines sorcerers as those who use their own energy to do magic or sorcery. They do not try to break the laws of nature and study to be able to bend them.

Mages, on the other hand, use the magic around them, often requesting some help from Fae creatures. They can and do break the laws of nature.

Elias is a mage, and Chise is a Sleigh Beggy, which allows her to be both a mage and a sorcerer. In Episode 7, Elias points out that mages and sorcerers are not the same right before Chise turns into a dragon. That shows how overpowered a mage can be, depending on their agreements with other creatures.

Messing with Sorcerers

You do not want to mess with a mage because you don’t know what Fae chose to help them. But what about sorcerers?

Well, based on how Philomela’s Grandmother has been handling her troubles, sorcerers have much more limited options. When trying to get her son back, the Grandmother had to rely on thugs with good old-fashioned guns. She might have used sorcery to conceal their faces, but it is the guns that were their main weapon. Fans believe that compared to a dragon, thugs are nothing, which is why messing with sorcerers is less stupid than messing with mages.

Still, probably should not bother magical folks. Just a thought.
