Jinshi is a fan favorite, and much of his behavior is excused away.
In Episode 10, he harasses Maomao in a way that is difficult to ignore.
It is unlikely that Jinshi gets reprimanded for it beyond what Gyokuyou has already done.
While played for comedy, this moment shows how unfair the world of The Apothecary Diaries is to women.
We have already discussed Jinshi’s behavior and deemed it moderately problematic. However, Jinshi’s new idea of fun may be a little too problematic. Fans are not happy with him harassing Maomao, and neither are we!
Honeyed Fingers
Jinshi has been trying to figure out a way to make Maomao like him and swoon over him like any other girl in the inner palace for a long time. He also enjoys it when Maomao does not look at him like any other girl; he likes her distrust of him, and he finds it funny when she is disgusted by him.
In Episode 10, Jinshi goes a little too far. He dips his fingers in honey and tries to make Maomao lick them. Maomao begs for help from Gaoshun, but he does not dare to go against Jinshi. Only Gyokuyou was brave enough to save Maomao.
Let’s be honest — this is harassment. It is not cute, and it is not funny. Maomao was harassed by a man she could not say no to, and that man held enough power for others to be afraid to intervene. A lot of fans reacted immediately, sharing the disapproval on their X accounts, as they do not support Jinshi's behavior.
Women in the Inner Palace
In our previous discussion, we found that Jinshi was not too creepy and that he did not do things other people could and would do in his place. We even hoped that he would change and start feeling for Maomao rather than viewing her as a toy. But it seems we were wrong, and this just goes to show, yet again, that the inner palace is not a friendly place for women. Even the character we, as a fandom, love thinks that it is funny to harass and scare Maomao, and that is not fair. Jinshi owes Maomao an apology. We hope he does come to realize his mistakes in time.
We love Jinshi, but we do not like him when he harasses Maomao. Did he go too far for us to forgive him?
