The Apothecary Diaries: Jinshi Might Not Be Who We Think He is

Fans analyze Jinshi’s outfit and behavior and come to the conclusion that he just might be more than just a eunuch… Or not, but it’s fun to theorize.

The Apothecary Diaries (Kusuriya no Hitorigoto) spoilers ahead!

Summary

  • Jinshi is one of the main characters, and he was introduced as a very beautiful eunuch.
  • It would have been very unwise to have a non-eunuch in the inner palace for political reasons.
  • Jinshi doesn’t dress like a eunuch. He dresses like a high-rank noble.
  • Jinshi tried to enter the party next to the spot meant for the Emperor’s brother.

Jinshi is the second main character of The Apothecary Diaries, and he was called a very handsome eunuch by other characters. That seems reasonable since he has access to the inner palace. Letting a non-eunuch into the inner palace would be rather dangerous since it would call into question the parentage of all children born in it. However, fans have been watching Jinshi closely, and they have some arguments in favor of Jinshi being more than just a eunuch.

Jinshi’s Duties

Jinshi’s duties are not very clear, but he seems to be involved in every important event that we see on the screen. He is, in particular, solving mysteries next to Maomao, and he is quite good at that! Besides, he has a high enough rank to, for example, call an emperor’s concubine to talk to Maomao. He seems to have significant power in the inner palace.

Jinshi’s Attire

Jinshi doesn’t dress like other eunuchs. He doesn’t wear their head scarves, in particular. He does wear a robe with a Mandarin square, which, according to more knowledgeable fans, is the attire of powerful people. In fact, the clothing seems to imply that he is not a eunuch.

the fact that his clothing even has a Mandarin square at all indicates that he's definitely not a eunuch

Not everybody knows the specifics of Middle-age Chinese clothing, though, and besides, the anime might not be playing by the rules of actual Chinese etiquette. Still, Jinshi’s clothing is suspicious.

The Party

People noticed that when Jinshi tried to join the garden party, he did it next to the place meant for the Emperor’s brother. That, combined with everything above, makes a lot of fans sure that Jinshi is the Emperor’s brother.

It might not be true, especially since having a non-eunuch in the inner palace is bad news. But still, a lot of fans theorize that Jinshi is not a eunuch and is, in fact, the emperor’s brother. And theorizing is fun and harmless as we wait for the next episode.
