The Apothecary Diaries: Maomao’s Vague Answers Will Save Her One Day

Maomao’s superpower is giving really vague answers. For so long, we thought she did it out of compassion. But what if it’s about self-preservation?

The Apothecary Diaries (Kusuriya no Hitorigoto) spoilers ahead!

Summary

  • Maomao is a kind girl, and that kindness gets her into trouble sometimes.
  • Maomao tends to give vague answers, especially when her words can harm another person.
  • Maomao’s status also means that any mistake can result in execution.
  • It is possible that Maomao does not give direct answers because she is afraid for her own life.

We have already commented on how Maomao is very discreet and does not reveal information she thinks would hurt someone vulnerable. However, now that we think about it, do her vague answers help others or is she looking out for herself?

Helping Others

Maomao is known for her kindness. She got into the taste tester role because she could not stay silent and let the children of the concubines die when she could prevent it with a simple message. She definitely has a kind heart, and she is also willing to give second chances.

For example, in Episode 6, she lets Lishu’s taste tester off the hook because she has good enough reasons to assume that the lady was just messing with Lishu and not trying to kill her. Maomao is especially evasive that day in responding to Jinshi’s questions. She is willing to help a woman she has never met before because she feels for her and knows that her life is very expendable in the inner palace.

Helping Herself

In Episode 9, Maomao has to deal with two potential murders, and she finds herself hesitating whether to call one of them a murder or a suicide. The events of that day have her thinking about her own death, so we can assume that her hesitation was more than just having limited knowledge.

If Maomao makes someone powerful mad at her because she uncovers something unsavory, Maomao’s life would be in great danger. That is precisely why Maomao did not want to be noticed and wanted to spend her years in the inner palace in the shadows. Her willingness to help others got her into this mess, and now Maomao has to watch every step.

Maomao is smart enough not to get into trouble, but sometimes, her kind heart ruins everything.
