Her skills are noticed by the emperor's servants. That's why she gets involved in investigating crimes. The second most important character is the court eunuch Jinshi. He has no outstanding abilities, but he is quite charismatic.
The Apothecary Diaries attracts with its mysteries. There are basically two types of riddles. The first are the usual crimes and conspiracies that occur in the course of palace intrigues. The second are general mysteries about the main characters' origins. Maomao's progress in solving the mystery surrounding Jinshi is a pleasure to watch.
Even though this series doesn't seem to have a full-fledged romance storyline, there is one. Very soon we start to notice Jinshi's affection for Maomao, and it grows with each episode. Maybe their relationship is another reason why we loved this anime.

Episode 12 was recently released, marking the end of the first part (there will be 24 episodes in total). The last episode was impressive and full of twists — Maomao first left the palace and then returned.
Details about the plot of the second cour are revealed in the trailer which was specially released for the end of the year. We can assume that Maomao will indeed return to the palace, but will serve under Jinshi's leadership. It wouldn't be surprising to see their relationship develop quickly.
Many already beloved characters will remain, but there will be new ones as well. We've been shown the Emperor's new concubine who will replace Ah-Duo, a mysterious man named Lakan, and an equally mysterious woman named Suirei who looks suspiciously like Maomao.
Most likely, Lakan will offer the main character a new big investigation to work on for more than one episode. There are a lot of palace mysteries waiting for us. Maybe we will even learn the secrets of the main characters.
