The Apothecary Diaries feels very much like a detective anime.
Although Maomao solved Jinshi's mystery, everything went back to normal.
Speculations are the most interesting part of the story.
The Apothecary Diaries is one of the most popular fall titles. It attracts not only with its interesting protagonist, but also with its fascinating story. Episode 11 was very important in terms of the plot, as it attempted to solve the major show secrets. Many people want to know who Maomao and Jinshi are and their origin, but is it really necessary? It seems like it could ruin the whole appeal of the anime.
What's behind the plot?
There are a lot of mysteries in The Apothecary Diaries. We can say that the detective elements are the most important. The main character serves in the palace and helps investigate crimes that occur during palace intrigues. She uses her medical and pharmaceutical knowledge to draw conclusions, and her wit leads to the ultimate answer. At times, The Apothecary Diaries feels very much like a detective anime. There's a smart and independent protagonist and ever-evolving mysteries, which are not easy to solve.
In addition to the usual puzzles and crimes, there are overall mysteries within the story. All of them are related to the main characters or their surroundings. First of all, of course, is Maomao's origin and the secrets of her adoptive father. Although the girl tries to hide her true appearance with makeup and clothing, Maomao looks like a noble-born person. It's hardly a coincidence.
Another mystery is the origin and personality of the court eunuch Jinshi. Unlike Maomao, his beauty and manners raise no questions, and we know from the beginning that he is hiding something.
Let mysteries remain mysteries
Episode 11 was a special one. Maomao not only solved the mystery of Lihua's maid and her responsibility for the death of the concubine's child, but also made progress in solving the Jinshi secret. In fact, she solved it. The eunuch looks very much like Lihua — their eyes and hair are a similar color. Maomao hypothesized that the Lihua child was not dead, but was switched with the Emperor's child. This rescued child is Jinshi. She also learns that her adoptive father worked at the court and was banished due to a serious mistake.
Although Maomao solved this mystery, everything went back to the way it was before. The girl assumed that she had made it all up and that it was just her imagination. The creators realize that it's too early to reveal the secrets because the whole plot hinges on the mysteries surrounding the main characters' personalities.
If we had learned in Episode 11 that Jinshi is (presumably) the Emperor's son, we would have lost interest in that character. The same can be said for Maomao. Of course, we suspect that this character is not so simple, but these speculations are the most interesting part of the story.
Don't you think it's better without revealing Maomao and Jinshi's secrets?
