The Chiikawa Film Is at 14.66 Billion Yen and the Number Everyone Is Quoting Is Two Weeks Old
The Chiikawa film has taken ¥14.66 billion and ten million admissions in Japan. The figure travelling in English is ¥13.9 billion, it is three updates old, and "biggest film of 2026" means something narrower than it sounds.
A film about a small anxious white creature and its two friends has taken ¥14.66 billion at the Japanese box office and drawn roughly ten million admissions, as of day 52 of its release on 13 September.
The number circulating in English is ¥13.9 billion. It was accurate in early September and has been superseded three times since.
Which yen figure this is
Japanese box office reporting uses two different measures and they differ by roughly a factor of two.
- 兴行収入 — gross box office, what the cinemas take. This is what every figure in modern Japanese reporting means, and it is what ¥14.66 billion is.
- 配給収入 — distributor income, the older standard, roughly half of gross. Records quoted from before 2000 are often in this currency.
Put a modern gross figure next to a pre-2000 distributor figure and the modern film wins by default, without anyone lying. It is the single most common error in English-language coverage of Japanese box office, and the reason to say which metric you are using every time.
What "biggest of 2026" actually means
On 6 September the film passed Detective Conan: Fallen Angel of the Highway at ¥13.7 billion to become the highest-grossing film released in Japan in 2026. Not the highest-grossing anime film of 2026, not the highest-grossing Japanese film — all releases, foreign titles included.
That is the strongest true version of the claim, and it is strong. It is also not an all-time record, or close to one:
- At ¥13.9 billion it sat around 23rd on Japan's all-time chart, just under Jujutsu Kaisen 0 at ¥13.89 billion. Its exact placing at ¥14.66 billion has not been published.
- Demon Slayer: Mugen Train is at roughly ¥40.7 billion. Nothing released this decade is within sight of it.
The run, in order
- 24 July 2026 — released. Opening day ¥990 million, beating Detective Conan: The Million Dollar Pentagram's ¥960 million opening day. First three days: 1,508,538 admissions, ¥2.24 billion.
- 23 August, day 30 — crosses ¥10 billion. The fourth anime film among 2026 Japanese releases to do it, after Zootopia 2, the Conan film and Toy Story 5.
- 6 September — passes ¥13.8 billion and takes the year.
- 11–13 September — still number one, 10.09 million admissions, ¥14.6 billion cumulative. Second that weekend was The Odyssey.

The comparison that makes the number legible
Ten million admissions in a country of 123 million is about one person in twelve, for a film based on a four-panel strip about characters who mostly work, eat, and worry. It has now outgrossed, in its home market, a Christopher Nolan epic that is simultaneously breaking records in South Korea.
It did it in 52 days, at number one every weekend, with no franchise history longer than a few years.
What has not been published
- Any cumulative figure newer than 13 September. The following weekend's chart may have moved it again.
- Its exact all-time rank at ¥14.66 billion. The 23rd-place figure was measured at ¥13.9 billion and comes from a single source.
- Overseas grosses, which exist in Taiwan and Hong Kong and should never be added to the yen total.
The number will move again before anyone updates it
¥13.9 billion was correct for about four days. It has been reprinted in English for two weeks, which is roughly how long it takes for a Japanese box office figure to cross into English-language coverage, stop updating, and become the canonical number.
The figure today is ¥14.66 billion in gross box office, as of 13 September, still at number one. All three of those clauses matter, and the version travelling abroad has none of them.
