The final chapter of the Jujutsu Kaisen manga will be released in 2024.
Gege Akutami already knew how the story would end during JJK0.
However, we can still see the continuation of the story after the battle with Sukuna.
Jujutsu Kaisen is one of the most successful shōnen franchises, easily standing up to contemporaries like Demon Slayer and My Hero Academia, as well as timeless classics such as Hunter × Hunter, One Piece, and Naruto (well, now it's called Boruto). Written and illustrated by Gege Akutami, the manga series is now in its sixth year of shattering all records, drawing a massive fan following and having sold over 90 million copies around the world as of January 2024.
The Demon Slayer manga has finished its original run, and My Hero Academia is also drawing to a close. This makes JJK one of the last shōnen standing, keeping its fans on the edge of their seats.
Unfortunately, Gege has recently confirmed that his story is coming to an end as well, with the final chapter to be released in 2024. We have yet to find out how the battle between the sorcerers and Sukuna will be handled, or if the Tengen storyline will ever be resolved, but it looks like the mangaka already knows exactly how Jujutsu Kaisen will end.
Gege Already Knew How the Story Would End When He Made Jujutsu Kaisen 0
Eagle-eyed fans re-reading the English-language version of Jujutsu Kaisen 0 published in North America by Viz Media have noticed a remarkable postscript left by the author himself. Keep in mind that JJK0 came out before the main story and was originally titled Tokyo Metropolitan Curse Technical School, so what is said in the caption is about ideas the author developed long before Jujutsu Kaisen was released:
'I think in general terms when coming up with a story. (Doing this way, I end up with a theme regardless…) For this reason, the numerous ideas I've had that didn't make the cut for other manga are being funneled into Jujutsu Kaisen! I'm a having a blast!!'
It is noteworthy that Gege mentioned that he had sketched out the content of the last chapter of the manga in advance:
'I've already decided on the final chapter's content as well as several things that will happen along the way. However, I still don't know how the dots will connect. I hope everything will turn out okay… But will I be able to finish it…?'
Thus, all the character deaths that have happened or are about to happen are clearly planned beforehand by the cynical Gege. Nevertheless, like the mangaka himself, we hope that 'everything will turn out okay'.
Gege Akutami Has Confirmed That JJK Is Nearing Its Climax
There have been rumors among fans for a while that the Shibuya Showdown arc is the final one, and that we should expect about 10 more chapters before the story ends. And this was indirectly confirmed by Gege himself during the Q&A. On Twitter, a fan translation of the Q&A regarding the Culling Game arc was posted, in which the author mentioned Shibuya Showdown as the finale:
'I thought of it as a crutch for taking us towards the Shibuya Showdown arc (final section/saga). I had already decided on the things that had to happen (like characters and Colony stuff) but I kept each Colony segment contained to be its own individual volume, and thought about how to make them as exciting as possible as I progressed.'
Of course, this doesn't mean that the story ends after the final battle with Sukuna. It's likely that the Shibuya Showdown arc represents the climax, after which we'll get a gradual approach to the ultimate end of the story. After all, Jujutsu Kaisen still has enough storylines and unanswered questions that can be addressed after the fight.
The next chapter of the manga will be released on Sunday, July 28, 2024.
