The Unwanted Undead Adventurer Breaks Expectations Just Like Frieren, and It's Very Appealing

Just the way we like it!

The Unwanted Undead Adventurer (Nozomanu Fushi no Boukensha) spoilers ahead!

Summary:

  • The Unwanted Undead Adventurer is very similar to Frieren.
  • The Unwanted Undead Adventurer offers an unusual perspective — we see the adventure through the eyes of a loner who has become a monster.
  • During the first episodes, the second main character was Rina, but the creators abruptly replaced her with the protagonist's longtime friend.

After the success of Frieren: Beyond Journey's End (Sousou no Frieren), the popularity of quiet adventure titles increased dramatically. The Unwanted Undead Adventurer is certainly inferior to many other winter season newcomers like Delicious in Dungeon or Solo Leveling, but this anime has many other entertaining elements.

In particular, The Unwanted Undead Adventurer is very similar to Frieren, not only in mood and characters, but also in unexpected plot twists.

The best of the popular titles

The Unwanted Undead Adventurer looks like an ordinary anime about the main character's exploration of dangerous places. At first it is like that — Faina Rentt takes a mission and goes into a dungeon. But there he meets a powerful dragon that kills him.

Nevertheless, Rentt comes back to life, but in the body of a monster — a low-level skeleton. Now he must learn all about his new abilities and find a way to become more like a human.

From the very beginning it is clear that The Unwanted Undead Adventurer offers an unusual perspective — we see the adventure not from the position of an ordinary hero, but through the eyes of a loner who has also become a monster.

The series has a very quiet atmosphere and a slow pace of narration. During the first episodes we just watch Rentt trying to survive in the dungeon and killing various dangerous creatures to become stronger.

Another appealing part that makes The Unwanted Undead Adventurer similar to Frieren is the calm characters. Rentt is very friendly and kind, he doesn't come across as an overly emotional protagonist, which makes him a rather mature hero. The calm characters are the hallmark of Frieren, which gives the title a realistic feel.

Unexpected twist

Perhaps all viewers familiar with Frieren remember the unexpected twist involving Sein's sudden departure. At first, the priest seemed to be the main character and a perfect fit for the Frieren team, but at the beginning of the second cour, he went on an independent journey and disappeared from the plot entirely.

A similar twist happened in The Unwanted Undead Adventurer. During the first episodes, the second main character was Rina (the girl standing next to Rentt on the poster, by the way) — she helped Rentt in the dungeon and led him to the city.

The creators gradually and carefully introduced this character into the story (telling her backstory and showing her distinctive features), but abruptly gave up and replaced her with the protagonist's longtime friend Lorraine.

Just like in Frieren, the writers didn't spare the character to make the story less predictable. Although we may see Rina again.
