It follows Guideau and Ashaf, who work together on magic-related cases.
The series is very good at subverting expectations.
Episode 1 of The Witch and the Beast (Majo to Yajuu) is finally here, and it’s definitely something to talk about.
The series follows Guideau and Ashaf, who are members of The Order of Magical Resonance, an organization working on magic related cases. But this is not the only reason why they’re searching for witches. Guideau was cursed by one of them, and now she’s eager to find a way to break the curse.
We did not expect that
Speaking of ways to break a curse… This is where the fun starts. The Witch and the Beast does a lot of surprising things you wouldn’t expect.
Back when we only had a couple of trailers for the series, we were told that there were two official ways of breaking a witch’s curse: a true love kiss and the hope of the witch having a change of heart.
These two are pretty generic and even typical for witch-related media. But the anime provides a third option, and this is where the surprises start.
The third option is to kiss the witch. And this is exactly what Guideau does! Fans knew about the third option from the trailer and the synopsis of the series, but they expected it to be killing the witch or something just as cruel.
But the anime throws some yuri at you with the kiss. Let’s just say that no one is disappointed by that.
Guideau is actually the beast?
Guideau and Ashaf are also very good at subverting expectations. When you first look at them and read the title of the anime, you think that Guideau is the witch, and Ashaf is the beast. But it turns out to be the other way around.
Ashaf releasing Guideau’s true body from his coffin at the end of the episode was definitely something that no one expected. And yet, how cool was it?
This led fans to believe that the witch in the title of the anime is not Ashaf but the witch that cursed Guideau. And we can’t wait to finally meet her (him?) and see how this will all play out.
The cruelty of the Witch and the Beast’s world was also unexpected. The series got very dark really soon, and we can already experience some gore and dismemberment in the first episode. Which is very fitting for a story like that, but can still shock you.
