It's something you wouldn't expect from the studio that created the most mind-blowing sci-fi anime in history.

The first anime from the legendary Gainax studio that created Evangelion was not a story about giant robots or anything else sci-fi, but a romantic comedy His and Her Circumstances in the shoujo age segment.

The work on this series faced many difficulties and ended with Hideaki Anno leaving the post of director.

What Is His and Her Circumstances About?

Yukino Miyazawa is one of the best students at school. But few people know that all this is just an image Yukino plays in public. At home, she turns into a disheveled slacker in a tracksuit. None of her classmates even suspects that their star is obsessed with the attention of others and tries to be the best for the sake of popularity.

Yukino was quite happy with this double life until Arima appeared. He started to "steal" her fans: the classmates started to turn to him more and more. The girl sees him as a rival until Arima confesses his feelings to her.

The girl rejects his advances, but Arima soon learns her secret by dropping in unannounced. Now the young man, who blackmails Yukino, is the winner. It turns out that he is not so good-natured himself and that his public face is the same mask. Gradually, however, the two become closer and help each other to become themselves.

His and Her Circumstances Has a Unique Animation Style

On the one hand, the anime is a unique work in terms of both direction and overall atmosphere. Shots of real locations are interspersed with animation, there are shots that seem to come straight out of the manga, and the series is also rich in the emotional palette of the characters.

However, as in the case of Evangelion, there was not enough money for the final episodes. Because of that, in one of the last episodes, you can see a rare technique: paper figures with images of characters appear in the frame.

Hideaki Anno Had a Conflict with the Manga Creator

In addition to the obvious budget problems in the last episodes, another unpleasant thing happened. Anno came into conflict with the creator of the original manga, artist Tsuda Masami.

The latter wanted to see more romance than comedy in the adaptation. Anno disagreed. Perhaps it was the director's insistence that made the anime so bold and experimental, which was much less common in shoujo.

Although Anno insisted on focusing on comedy and less drama in the anime, this did not have a bad effect on the plot. There are enough funny moments, but also serious topics that are familiar to everyone.

The focus is on how we want to appear in the eyes of others, embarrassed or afraid to show our true selves. The characters work together to overcome these artificial boundaries, make more and more friends and, of course, fall in love.

Where to Watch His and Her Circumstances?

His and Her Circumstances is available to stream on Prime Video.
