It is an overlooked project that deserves more attention.
At the end of September, an anime adaptation of the fantasy manga Let This Grieving Soul Retire by writer Tsukikage and artist Chyko was released.
The first season will consist of 13 episodes, half of which have already been released. At first glance, the description of the series does not stand out from the crowd: a world full of magic, adventurers and dangerous treasures with invincible bosses.
We have seen all this more than once in action anime like Solo Leveling. But the title still has something to surprise us.
What Is Let This Grieving Soul Retire About?
The leader of the famous Grieving Souls squad is an ordinary guy named Krai. Unlike the other members of the team and his childhood friends, he has no outstanding physical strength, magical abilities, or talent for alchemy. But for some reason, everyone around him considers him to be a powerful warrior, a great fortune teller, and a wise commander.
For years, he has tried to correct this misunderstanding, but the situation only gets worse. As a result, Krai no longer wants to prove anything – he just wants to avoid responsibility and live a quiet, peaceful life.
So Krai's team of rookies goes on a deadly dangerous mission that he accidentally assigns himself. None of them even suspects that they are going to certain death, because if Krai gave the task, then it is feasible.
Such false confidence literally saves them, inspires courage, and encourages them to think outside the box. There are many such situations in the anime, and only the viewer knows the true intentions of Krai.
Let This Grieving Soul Retire Has an Unconventional Main Character
Some of Krai's traits may seem negative, but under certain circumstances they take on a different hue. Cowardice becomes caution, avoidance of responsibility becomes reasonable delegation and trust, and abandoning a task halfway through becomes a competent allocation of energy.
Of course, it is not always possible to turn the rules of the game upside down. The important thing is that Krai was in his place. If he were a lone hunter his qualities would not look so attractive. His friends were the key to his success: they always saw his potential and supported him in everything.
Let This Grieving Soul Retire Is a Life-Affirming Project About the Power of Friendship
Friends never helped Krai out of pity. They simply believed in him, as he believed in them. Without realizing it, the guy got better alongside his friends, balancing and strengthening their alliance. And so did everyone in the squad – this is what true friendship means.
Household chores, dreams of retirement and Krai's laziness are the main killers of pathos in the series. Yes, there are battles with giant armored direwolves, a mysterious organization of outlaw wizards, duels between brave hunters.
But none of this seems serious when Krai appears in the frame with a sad face and a desire to disappear. For many, this is relatable and therefore funny.
