The manga is almost over, so fan theories are running wild.
Summary:
- Some fans expect My Hero Academia to end with everyone losing their Quirks.
- That doesn’t make much sense for Izuku’s development as a hero.
- The theory also doesn’t take into account realism and themes of the manga.
My Hero Academia (Boku no Hero Academia) manga is in its final arcs now. As such, there has never been a time when the fandom was more focused on theories. In particular, fans seem to be enjoying theorizing about how the series is going to end.
These theories range from somewhat boring to wild and completely unexpected. The plausibility of them also varies, of course. However, there’s one theory that seems to be pretty popular that doesn’t really make much sense if you think about it: some readers think that the series is going to end with Quirks going away.
What’s the point of becoming the #1 hero?
The very beginning of the series was clear on one thing. My Hero Academia is a story of Izuku Midoriya becoming the #1 hero — and, naturally, fans can expect that to happen at the end of the manga.
If Quirks disappear at the end of the manga, the whole setup would make no sense. Why give Izuku a Quirk, if he’s going to lose it in the end? If he becomes the #1 hero without a Quirk, he didn’t need it in the first place. And if somehow, his One For All Quirk remains, his progress is going to feel undeserved.
The theory has a lot of logical holes
Quirks disappearing also makes no sense from the realistic standpoint. Granted, MHA has never actually been realistic, but it still has some internal rules and logic. Quirks disappearing would make no sense for a lot of heroes (and non-heroes) with Quirks that alter their physiology.
Take, for example, characters like Tokoyami — whose bird-like appearance is a part of who they are. While Tokoyami’s appearance has little to do with his Quirk, the theory doesn’t even address these cases. And in cases like Tsui, their Quirks are directly tied to their extraordinary appearance.
Thematic implications
The main reason why the theory makes no sense, however, is that it simply misses the point of the series. MHA went out of its way to elaborate on how it’s not the Quirks that pose danger to the society: rather, it’s those who use them to do evil.
Getting rid of all Quirks would make no sense thematically. While it is based on the idea that Quirks will become stronger with each generation, that would be a cop-out kind of ending. Not to mention, it would ruin a setting that fans love, without solving any issues: those who wanted to become villains would be able to do so regardless of their Quirks’ existence.
