This is a look at the end of the world from an unusual angle.
The choice will remain even after the end of the world – this is what numerous post-apocalyptic movies convince us. Today we recommend to take a closer look at an atypical example of such stories.
Pigtails is a short story from the genre of slice-of-life, where special attention is paid to routine, everyday life and ordinary things, which can speak here, unlike people.
What Is Pigtails About?
By the sea, far from people, lives a nameless teenage girl. Every morning, she ties her hair into a ponytail and does her chores alone. The scene repeats itself day after day, but she does not complain.
Visitors are rare: every now and then people in white chemical suits drop by, examine her and bring her the things she needs. Sometimes a young postman comes by, but he does not dare to speak to the girl.
Pigtails Is a Сurious Take on Post-Apocalypse
The people's conversations will remain a secret, but the viewer will be able to eavesdrop on the dialogues of household objects living in the house.
Their lines, inaudible to the girl and the postman, gradually outline the setting: as the TV brought by the young man will report, an apocalypse took place some time ago, and the girl's house is located in a fenced-in vacant lot. The isolated area serves as a farm for the inhabitants of the Wall to grow people for spare parts for the sick.
In the short film, first-time director Yoshimi Itazu adapted the manga of the same name by Machiko Kyo. It was inspired by the events of 2011, when a strong earthquake led to a radiation accident at the Fukushima nuclear power plant.
The Dialog Between Objects Is a Unique Way to Move the Plot Forward
The naive watercolor style, which corresponds to the heroine's age, and the cheerful chatter of household objects at first mislead the viewer. They seem so at odds with the post-apocalyptic reality in which the girl with the ponytails lives.
The dialogues between the objects – in contrast to the silent conversations of the people – not only set dramatic accents, but also illustrate the choice the main character will have to make in the finale.
Pigtails Has a Bittersweet Finale
The girl learns that her life is artificial from the postman, who has accidentally visited the other side of the wall. When he sees the amputated limbs of the patients, he understands their fate and suggests that his beloved get as far away from the farm as possible.
Having almost climbed over the wall, she takes a farewell look at the house in the distance – and, it seems, decides that she is not ready to part with such a simple and unpretentious existence.
