Togashi Revealed One of His Ideas for Hunter x Hunter Finale: What That Means for the Series

It is still unclear when and how the manga will end.

Summary:

  • According to leaks, Togashi revealed a version of Hunter x Hunter ending he decided not to use.
  • This ending will be used if Togashi dies before finishing the manga.
  • This ending will feature Jin, Gon’s granddaughter.

According to yet unconfirmed leaks from a live talk show with Yoshihiro Togashi, the mangaka revealed some previously unknown information about the planned finale for Hunter x Hunter. Apparently, he has 3 possible endings in mind, as well as the fourth one, which he discarded (and shared during the talk show), but stated that it would be the ending if he doesn't end up finishing the manga. It is currently unclear what events would precede that ending.

The reasons for hiatus

Hunter x Hunter has become infamous for its irregular schedule. Yes, Togashi’s most famous manga was featured in the latest 10 issues of Jump, but prior to that, there have been no updates for almost 4 years. It is understandable that fans are upset about lack of progress, however, there are some reasons behind it. Obviously, creative burnout is a thing, however, the main reason is Togashi’s health issues. The mangaka is suffering from chronic back pains, which make him unable to work while sitting down. As such, he only works on an irregular schedule and only while laying down. With him being rather grim about the issue of finishing the manga, even suggesting that it is possible he won’t be able to finish HxH before his death, it seems that these issues might be worse than the fans previously thought.

The possible ending

The ending, which features Jin, seemingly a granddaughter of Gon, has a couple of throwbacks to the early chapters of the series. The giant fish she catches is an obvious reference to Master of the Swamp, the fish Gon himself caught in the first chapter of the manga/first episode of the anime. Jin, however, is not intent on becoming a hunter, instead wanting to stay home and live peacefully. The ending would also feature children and grandchildren of other characters, as well as a figure in the background watching the whole scene.

Why did Togashi discard this version?

Togashi claimed this ending (dubbed “ending D”) is not satisfying enough, with a satisfaction rating of only 50%, compared to his currently decided “ending C”, which, according to him, would have a satisfaction rating of 90%. It is not clear what the numbers actually mean, and regardless, the actual ending is far and far away. Fans sincerely hope, however, that the manga would be finished properly, and wish for the mangaka’s health to improve. We, too, wish Yoshihiro Togashi all the best wishes.
