Top 10 Openings of Winter 2024, Ranked

Top 10 Openings of Winter 2024, Ranked

This season has a surprising amount of bangers.

Despite Winter 2024 having fewer super-popular anime than in 2023, it doesn’t mean there’s nothing to watch. Of course, one thing that can definitely make you watch an anime is its opening — and in this season, there’s a surprising amount of great OPs. Here are the ten very best of them (believe us, it was hard to decide on only ten!).

10. Solo Leveling

The opening for Solo Leveling (Ore dake Level Up na Ken) does pretty much everything you want from it. The song hypes you up for the episode, and the visuals showcase the best part of the series — the action.

Both the opening and the soundtrack are produced by Hiroyuki Sawano, the composer of Attack on Titan (Shingeki no Kyojin) and Kill la Kill, among other series. It seems that A-1 Pictures is set on hiring the biggest names for this adaptation, and it seems to be working.

9. A Sign of Affection

Not every opening has to be an energetic song that prepares you for tension and battles. A Sign of Affection (Yubisaki to Renren) is a very touching romance series, where the female protagonist has a hearing impairment. As such, a very delicate approach is needed.

The visuals are well-crafted, and the song is mellow and somewhat relaxing. This is the kind of opening that fits its anime perfectly.

8. Villainess Level 99

Villainess Level 99: I May Be the Hidden Boss but I'm Not the Demon Lord (Akuyaku Reijou Level 99: Watashi wa Ura-Boss desu ga Maou dewa Arimasen) might be just another villainess isekai, but it certainly has a great opening. No, we’re not talking about the fake game opening in episode one, but that one is good, too.

Mayu Maeshima is the former vocalist of MYTH & ROID, and to most, she’s mostly known for songs in Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World- (Re:Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu). So, the opening for Villainess Level 99 is expectedly a banger.

7. Ishura

Ishura might not be the most watched anime of the season — and it’s arguably very underrated — but its opening is downright insane. The band behind the opening, sajou no hana, was involved in the second opening of Mob Psycho 100 (and shares some members with the performers of the other two as well).

The visuals are just as confusing (in a good way) as the series itself. Ishura has many characters and plotlines, and the opening sets us up for that.

6. Delicious in Dungeon

Of course, with Delicious in Dungeon (Dungeon Meshi) being made by Trigger, fans expected a great opening from it. They actually got it, and it is among the best openings of the season as well.

Both the song and the visuals have an adventure feeling to them. Delicious in Dungeon is quite a unique take on fantasy adventure — and its opening is a perfect fit.

5. Frieren

While the first opening of Frieren: Beyond Journey's End (Sousou no Frieren) was undoubtedly great, some fans complained that it didn’t really fit the series. The second opening, however, does fit, and arguably perfectly so.

The new opening is a chill beat by Yorushika — and the nature of it reflects the journey theme of the anime incredibly well. Frieren is not really a series about action and hype, after all: contemplation and self-reflection play a big role in it.

4. High Card Season 2

Not many people watched the first season of High Card. Even fewer seem to be watching S2, so many people probably haven’t even seen this opening. That doesn’t mean it doesn’t deserve a spot in this top, of course.

The opening for the second season of High Card feels like a throwback to the early 2010s, which were arguably a golden age for urban fantasy anime. With amazing animation and a great song, it’s definitely one of the best openings of the season.

3. The Witch and the Beast

The band that does the opening for The Witch and the Beast (Majo to Yajuu), Sokoninaru, had quite a huge following for their unique music style. They, however, never got an anime song before, so many people were very happy about this opening.

Many things about The Witch and the Beast are very unique. That includes the opening — there’s quite nothing really like it, and that’s why it’s so great. At the same time, both the anime and the OP feel nostalgic for some inexplicable reason.

2. The Dangers in My Heart Season 2

What’s up with romcoms and receiving some of the best openings ever? Seriously, the opening for the second season of The Dangers in My Heart (Boku no Kokoro no Yabai Yatsu) is nothing short of impressive — on multiple levels.

The visuals feel like an animation flex on the technical side alone. That’s not all, though. Both the visual component and the song feel incredibly atmospheric — giving us the sweet feeling of first love the series is all about.

1. Bucchigiri?!

Bucchigiri?! is the sleeper hit of the season. An original series produced by MAPPA, it impressed nearly everyone who watched it with its first episode alone — and while the episode itself was great, a huge part of why people were sold on it was the opening.

Bucchigiri’s opening is energetic and even chaotic. This reflects the nature of the anime itself, and in a good way. The nature of the anime is hard to understand from the first episode alone — and even harder to describe — yet somehow, the opening perfectly sets up the mood for it. Also, the animation is simply incredible.
