Top 5 Anti-Romance Anime To Watch on a Rainy Day

As Roy Mustang said, it’s raining all right.

There are a lot of great anime that focus on sweet romances that make people cheer their favorite characters on. But what about the times when it doesn’t work out? These stories tease and lead people on, only to hit them with tragedy or sad dead end, leaving you only wondering what could’ve been.

Spoilers ahead!

5. Chainsaw Man

Now, this could’ve been higher on the list, because, while Denji’s situation is truly dire, his story is not finished and he definitely has a chance to find true love one day. While it may seem as if he’s driven more by lust than love, if he truly was driven by lust only, he wouldn’t have turned Himeno’s advances down. However, he simply has no luck on that front, as almost every girl who shows a sign of interest in him inevitably tries to kill him.

4. Mobile Suit Gundam: War in the Pocket

Gundam is a franchise featuring some of the most iconic anime love stories and also some of the darkest tragedies. It was honestly hard to choose from, but War in the Pocket is the best example of what could’ve been great. When a young Zeon soldier Berny meets Christina MacKenzie, a test Gundam pilot for the Earth Federation, the attraction between them is evident to everyone but themselves. Neither is aware of their circumstances, but both will eventually have to fight each other without realizing it.

3. Attack on Titan

Starting the story by establishing the main pairing of Eren Yeager and Mikasa Ackerman immediately, surprisingly, throughout the majority of the story Hajime Isayama chooses to do nothing with them. Poor Mikasa is only neglected by Eren until the very end, but by that time, it was simply too late for them.

2. Neon Genesis Evangelion

 - image 4

Speaking strictly about TV series continuity, Hideaki Anno explores what happens when you make two teenagers with a lot of emotional baggage live and fight together. According to him, only more angst and awkwardness happens, as both Asuka and Shinji struggle to empathize with each other, even after sharing a kiss.

1. Ashita no Joe

 - image 5

In the story two girls end up pursuing Joe Yabuki, the first one being Hayashi Noriko, who starts by dropping subtle hints on him until she’s driven to confront him directly about getting only cold shoulder from him. It wasn’t that Joe didn’t see the hints, he was ignoring them. But it’s not as tragic as his relationship with Shiraki Yoko, both hated each other from the moment they met, until Yoko confessed her love for him only to not receive any feelings back. Joe Yabuki is an unstoppable force who ended up torturing his love interests, because finding happiness for him would finally make him stop.

These stories aren’t about unrequited love or heartbreak, but about leaving it up to you only to imagine what could’ve been great.
