Grave of the Fireflies is a wartime story. It is about two children trying to survive without their parents in 1945 Japan. You know, though, that they will not succeed because their story is told by their spirits. With this major spoiler out of the way, the story is about starvation, illness, and war. It is a very grim tale, one that condemns war from the perspective of children.
Vampire in the Garden is essentially about the hopeless love (be it romantic or friendly) of two creatures that are not meant to be together. The daughter of a high-ranking human and a vampire queen, neither of whom want to be involved in the struggle between vampires and humans, come together in search for a paradise. A paradise where there is no war and humans and vampires can coexist peacefully. But paradises do not exist. And that is painful, and it will make you sob.
Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day (Ano Hi Mita Hana no Namae o Bokutachi wa Mada Shiranai)
A group of friends has drifted apart because of the death of one of them, Menma. However, a couple years later, what appears to be the spirit of Menma begins to haunt her former friend, Jinta Yadomi. She hopes to move on after a wish of hers is granted. She does not remember much, though, so Jinta has to make the friends come together again and help the poor spirit. This anime is definitely a tear-jerking experience.
This is a story about a deaf girl and a boy who used to bully her, but then tried to make it up to her. It is about friendship and wrong and right choices. Some very difficult topics are also covered by the anime, such as suicidal ideation. It is a realistic drama about children learning tough lessons, and it is likely to make you shed a couple tears.
This is a lighter story; in which the main character goes through many hardships, as well as heartwarming moments. After the death of her mother, she does not manage to stay with her grandfather, but she soon finds a new family and tries to help them break a curse. It is worth a watch and a tear or two.
Some anime should come with a box of tissues to wipe away the tears.
