Uraraka Didn't Get Enough Screentime in My Hero Academia, and Here's Why

Uraraka Didn't Get Enough Screentime in My Hero Academia, and Here's Why

Feel like she hasn’t had many relevant scenes outside of her interactions with Deku? You are not alone.

Summary:

  • Many characters in My Hero Academia have unique abilities, but barely get any screentime.
  • Uraraka was thought to be one of the main characters at first, but she is mostly defined by her attraction to Deku and rivalry with Toga.
  • Fans are reasonably upset, but this isn’t an issue unique to MHA.

My Hero Academia (Boku no Hero Academia) has a diverse cast. In fact, that was one of the things it was originally praised for — just class 1-A alone has 20 students, each with a unique Quirk.

Naturally, many people who have been watching MHA since the beginning expected most of these characters to be relevant at some point. While the side characters occasionally have fun interactions with the main cast, most of them don’t really contribute much to the plot.

Some fans felt that these characters have been unfairly forgotten — and curiously enough, one character that is often mentioned is Ochako Uraraka.

At first, some fans expected Deku, Bakugo and Uraraka to be the main protagonist trio, not unlike the iconic Team 7 of Naruto. While it seemed at first that the anime was going that way, that route was quickly abandoned.

Uraraka is still somewhat relevant to the global plot of MHA, however. She’s the romantic interest of Izuku Midoriya — although sometimes, we get the feeling that the development of their relationship comes from her side only. Deku is really too busy fighting most of the time.

Uraraka still gets screentime, but her arcs aren’t that important

The worst part is: Uraraka isn’t actually that important outside of her relationship with Deku. Yes, there’s her rivalry with Toga, which is a byproduct of that, but that’s largely its own thing. She simply doesn’t get enough action outside of that.

This, of course, upsets many fans, who feel that she was very much sidelined, especially after the first arcs. While she still gets screentime, it’s nowhere near enough — and with the first arcs presenting her as one of the main characters, the disappointment is understandable.

Fans have a right to be upset

Many viewers feel that My Hero Academia in general doesn’t have many especially interesting female characters. While that is at least debatable, there’s undoubtedly less of them than male characters. That’s not just an issue with MHA: many battle shounen in general suffer from it, with Naruto being brought up as one of the worst examples.

It’s also very sad to see characters sidelined, regardless of who they are. Uraraka’s Quirk, while not as flashy as those of Todoroki or Bakugo, definitely has a lot of uses and allows for many creative fights. With the manga being very close to the end, it doesn’t seem like this is going to change, unfortunately.
