Was Itachi a Good Brother? The Answer is More Complicated Than You Think

Was Itachi a Good Brother? The Answer is More Complicated Than You Think

Itachi was probably not sure himself.

Naruto spoilers ahead!

Summary:

  • Naruto fans argue whether Itachi was a good or a bad brother to Sasuke.
  • While it is obvious that Itachi loved Sasuke, he made a lot of mistakes.
  • In the end, Itachi probably loved the village more than he loved Sasuke.

Since it was revealed that everything Itachi did was for the sake of either his village or his brother, there has been discussions about his character. While there is little doubt that he was one of the “good guys”, the question of whether he was a good brother to Sasuke is still up in the air. There are many arguments from both sides of the conflict — let’s address the most important ones.

Itachi loved Sasuke

The most obvious part is: Itachi, who destroyed his entire clan, couldn’t make himself kill Sasuke. It is very obvious that he loved his little brother, going out of his way to check up on him after the invasion. Even after that, he’s done a lot of things for him, including planting a jutsu inside him to protect him from Obito, and, of course, dying at his hands during their fated battle. There’s no doubt that Itachi cared about Sasuke in his own way, however, he could have done better.

Itachi made mistakes

The biggest argument against that position is that a lot of Sasuke’s issues in the future could be avoided if Itachi didn’t torture Sasuke with Tsukuyomi — and if he told him the real reason behind the Uchiha Massacre. While it is unknown how the events would have unfolded after that, one thing is clear: these things heavily traumatized Sasuke, leaving him with hatred for Itachi. Yes, the latter obviously intended it to be that way, so he would be killed by Sasuke, who would become the village’s hero, as well as get Itachi’s eyes, offsetting the Sharingan eyesight loss.

There’s an issue, however: with Itachi being a genius, was there really no better solution? A lot of his subsequent actions also suffer from him trying to put his village above his brother — there was no need to hide the truth behind the massacre. Yet even after Sasuke left the village, Itachi manipulated him into killing him, hoping that he would never discover the truth. It seems like Itachi’s blind love for Hidden Leaf won in the end.

The conclusion

Itachi Uchiha was obviously a very deeply troubled person. He chose Konoha over everything else, but couldn’t kill Sasuke, who he loved more than anything. This choice ultimately led him to multiple bad and sometimes outright harmful decisions, like torturing Sasuke to create trauma and hatred in him. It can be argued that in the end, he valued Konoha over Sasuke, and therefore, wasn’t a good brother to him.
