Doctor Elise: The Royal Lady with the Lamp (Gekai Elise) is this season’s new anime, based on a South Korean web novel written by Yuin. Korean novel adaptations are thriving this season, huh?
A chance to change your life
The first episode aired on January 10, and it follows Dr. Song Jihyun, who devoted her life to becoming the best surgeon and saving as many people as she can. Why this passionate altruism, you may ask?
It’s very simple: in her past life she used to be Elise de Clorance, a fierce and greedy woman capable of destroying people’s lives. So when she isekais to the modern world and has a chance of living another life, she decides to become a doctor.
But being isekaied once is not enough for the series, and after a plane crash, the woman wakes up in her old body, the one of Elise, and now she’s got the chance to redeem herself and be a better person.
Fans’ theories
The peculiar story of Episode 1 already had fans thinking about the future. What if Elise were to die again? Would she go back to the modern world or is it her last chance to lead a meaningful life?
Song Jihyun was on the plane to Germany to save a patient, and it would be very interesting if by having fixed all of her past life issues as Elise, she gets a chance to come back to the modern days to save that patient at the end of the series. But this is just an early speculation.
And why has she come back to her previous life? Could it be her reward for being a brilliant surgeon and saving so many lives? She’s been given a chance at redemption, and we’re sure she won’t miss it this time.
Although the overall idea of the episode is very compelling, the beginning of the series feels rather slow. The pacing could have been much faster, and there are a lot of moments and dialogs that could have been omitted.
Still, the episode was quite enjoyable. It manages to grab the audience’s attention and makes you want to keep watching to find out how Elise is going to fix her past life. Her new medical skills will definitely come in handy in the past, so we’re expecting some surprised faces from the people around her.
