What Are We Waiting For In The Upcoming Class 3Z Ginpachi-sensei Anime

Gintama is back, but now it's set in school.

The final installment of Gintama was released in 2021, right in the heat of the raging pandemic. The show has been on TV since 2006, with manga that started in 2003, and in 2023 it celebrates its 20th anniversary. During the festival in March, it was announced that the series of spin-off novels "Class 3Z Ginpachi-sensei" will be animated.

Those who watched Gintama should be familiar with the brief lore of Ginpachi-sensei: it's a school setting where our beloved characters play either schoolkids or teachers. Yes, they play them: the characters are still holding onto Gintama's blatant disregard for the fourth wall, and they are aware of starring in a spin-off.

The series Class 3Z Ginpachi-sensei consists of eight books, each divided into chapters that are called lessons, just like your regular Gintama manga. These light novels were written by Tomohito Osaki, who also wrote light novels for the Naruto franchise and for Nurarihyon no Mago. Hideaki Sorachi, the author of the original Gintama manga, illustrated the novels.

The story deals with the daily shenanigans of a bunch of delinquents that class 3Z consists of: it's filled with familiar faces, and Ginpachi-sensei, an alternate reality version of Sakata Gintoki, is their homeroom teacher. Characters, in typical Gintama fashion, get into a variety of stupid conundrums, have to overcome weird obstacles, and cover the wholesomeness with a layer of intentional hilarity. The setting has changed, and that makes the story a little bit more relatable to a general audience (we already talked about the reason why school setting is so popular in anime and manga, and it's not just about the demographic).

Judging by the announcement, the synopsis, and some translated chapters, we will probably be attacked with more pop culture references than ever: even the first trailer has already referenced Spy x Family and Jujutsu Kaisen. The fourth wall would be practically non-existent with the characters knowing that they are characters and should act according to the school rules. We'll get the Gintama version of some classic high school scenarios: the school festival, the onsen trip, the sports festival, some ghost stories and heartwarming chapters focused on character development. And we should probably remember that the amount of crude jokes in Gintama may rival some ecchi works. Considering that one of the chapter titles in the novels is "Doing Things With Balls, Doing Things With Sticks, The Sports Festival Is Kind Of Naughty", we definitely may expect something along these lines in the anime adaptations.

The release date has not been announced yet, but the celebration of Gintama's 20th anniversary is not over yet: Shonen Jump, where Gintama has been published, said that there's more to come.
