Why Dragons Are Destroying Humanity Over a Bakery in Ragna Crimson

Can a cake be worth millions of lives? In Ragna Crimson, it absolutely can.

Ragna Crimson is an ongoing anime about hunting dragons. To be more precise, the two main characters, Ragna and Crimson, want to wipe dragons from the face of their planet.

From now on, we will use some spoilers. You can watch the two currently available episodes and then come back if you like. We would love to see you here.

In this article, we want to talk about the cake situation. A powerful dragon, Grymwelte, explains to one of the human characters, Leo, the reason for the sudden attack of dragons on all human cities, and that reason is cake. You see, one of the human cities used to have a wonderful bakery, which the Dragon God enjoyed. When the bakery went out of business, the Dragon God just decided to eradicate the entire human kingdom.

What is interesting about this moment is that it is not played for laughs, even though it is clearly meant to be ridiculous. It is not a comedic bit; the music remains serious and tense, as Leo realizes just how little the dragons think of humans. It is ridiculous to start a war over a bakery, but it is not a funny type of ridiculous; it is a tragic one. This moment in the anime is meant to demonstrate that human beings are unimportant, and their lives depend on the Dragon God finding their existence entertaining enough not to kill them.

To be fair, humans and dragons have always fought.

Leo herself is a dragon hunter; she had killed a fair share of them. But she had never fought a Superior Dragon before, and with how she was barely holding up against Grymwelte, it would be impossible for her to fight dragons that are above an average overgrown lizard.

Thus, the cake story exists to show a couple of things. For one, dragons had never tried to eradicate humans before. All those fights, which often cost people lives, were despite the fact that the dragons were not even trying. For another, dragons are creatures of whims, at least when humans are concerned, and they have always been in danger from the Dragon God. Finally, the dragons do want now, on a whim, to eradicate humans, and they are exceptionally effective at that.

In such a hopeless situation, it is not surprising that Ragna makes a pact with Crimson. Hopefully, their efforts to eradicate dragons would be effective this time.
