Would Demon Slayer Still Be Popular if It Didn't Look as Good as It Does?

Would Demon Slayer Still Be Popular if It Didn't Look as Good as It Does?

Are fans just blind to its weak points because all they see is flashy action?

Summary:

  • There are many reasons Demon Slayer can be criticized for, with some people saying it owes its popularity only to its stellar animation.
  • It’s still a fun story, and the manga was decently popular even before the anime.
  • It would still be popular, though probably not as popular as it is now.

Demon Slayer (Kimetsu no Yaiba) is probably the biggest anime among newer fans nowadays, and one that will for sure be remembered for years and years ahead. Featuring some of the flashiest animation found in recent years, its popularity is so natural it hardly deserves being discussed as it is. However, some anime fans speculate that the show’s popularity comes from its animation alone and not from its content. There is some truth in this point of view.

Is Demon Slayer even a good show outside of the animation?

There are many points of criticism to be made towards Demon Slayer. One of the most common is the fact that while the characters are all memorable, they are one-dimensional at best — with Nezuko being the most commonly criticized for basically being a non-character throughout most of the manga run. Tanjirou himself is often called an uninteresting character due to the fact that he is simply too good of a person, to the point where it doesn’t lead to any moral ambiguity within the show. While not every show needs to be morally gray, this is a point that is worth mentioning regardless.

Similarly, the big bad of Demon Slayer, Muzan, is criticized for being evil just for the sake of being evil, which doesn’t make for a compelling villain. The story is also often said to contain a lot of logical inconsistencies and deus ex machina moments (funnily enough, Nezuko’s behavior in the widely acclaimed Episode 19 is one of them).

It was popular even before the anime

That being said, if it was all this bad, Demon Slayer would not be so popular in the first place. The manga, however, was doing pretty well even before the anime adaptation — while not being the biggest thing in Jump, it was definitely popular enough. The anime was expected at some point. With how easy the plot is to follow, an incredibly memorable setting and down-to-earth cast of colorful characters, the popularity makes perfect sense. A top-tier adaptation just made it even more popular.

Cool animation only played a part in making it popular

There are fair criticisms to be made towards Demon Slayer. However, its popularity makes sense — while it's not perfect, it’s just a fun story for most of the readers and viewers, and that’s what ultimately matters to them. It would definitely be popular even if it wasn’t as well-looking as it is. Would it be the biggest thing? Probably not, but it would still be talked about.
