You May Not Have Noticed, but MAPPA's Bucchigiri?! Looks Like Reborn!

MAPPA's new show reminds a lot of one old anime…

Summary:

  • Bucchigiri?! bears some similarities to the relatively old anime Reborn!, which ran from 2006 to 2010.
  • Bucchigiri?! features not only high quality animation, but also an intriguing story.
  • Sawada Tsunayoshi, like Arajin, dreams of finding love but gets into trouble.

Bucchigiri?! is getting a lot of attention, mainly because it's a new project from Studio MAPPA. It is based on an original idea rather than a manga. The first episode was recently released and it pleasantly surprised viewers — it was dynamic and intriguing. Some even called it the best first episode of the winter season.

It may seem strange, but Bucchigiri?! bears some similarities to the relatively old anime Reborn! (Katekyou Hitman Reborn!), which ran from 2006 to 2010.

MAPPA's brilliant new release

Bucchigiri?! features not only high quality animation and detailed visuals (as many MAPPA projects do), but also an unusual, intriguing story. Tomoshibi Arajin is a simple, modest teenager who by an unfortunate coincidence ends up in a school where the only students are bullies.

There he falls in love with a girl at first sight and asks her out on a date. However, their meeting ends badly, and the girl's brother beats Arajin.

But he was saved by his new, unusual acquaintance — a mysterious genie who gave him strength and helped to defend himself. By the way, he asks him for his wish first. Although Arajin is not very imaginative and like a typical teenager he wishes to lose his virginity.

This is not a new idea for anime — many shonen protagonists dream, though not so openly, of the attention of girls. Another MAPPA character, Denji from Chainsaw Man, was probably the first to openly express his carnal desires.

Several interesting parallels

Although Arajin is similar to Denji as a character, the plot of Bucchigiri?! is very similar to Reborn! (at least in its core). The shonen by Artland was released from 2006 to 2010 and had 203 episodes.

It is the story of Sawada Tsunayoshi, a loser who, like Arajin, dreams of finding love but gets into trouble. One day, Tsuna meets a small child named Reborn, who introduces himself as a hitman and his future tutor. Tsuna is the heir of a mafia family and has to become stronger to lead it one day.

The similarity is that Arajin, like Tsuna, gains strength after being hit by a bullet. Observant viewers have noticed another amusing similarity — the Bucchigiri?! protagonist is almost naked when he gains his powers. This may be a coincidence, but we can't completely rule out the possibility that the creators of Bucchigiri?! wanted to add this notable reference.
