10 Times an Anime or a Manga Ending Was Bittersweet

Why are we crying if it’s a happy ending?

Spoilers for all the mentioned series (obviously)!

Do you know this feeling when you finish watching an anime and it has a somewhat happy ending or at least a satisfying conclusion? But there’s just something that still makes you feel upset. These are exactly the series we’d like to look at today.

  1. Attack on Titan (Shingeki no Kyojin)

 - image 1

It was impossible not to start with this one. Not only is Attack on Titan a real anime phenomenon, but its finale is still rather fresh.

The Titan Curse is broken, most of our faves are alive, the war is over (at least for some time), the Paradis and Eldians are safe, so why are we still crying and feeling like our hearts have been broken?

It doesn’t matter if you loved or hated Eren, it is difficult to deny that he was the center of the series. And having to say goodbye to him, while watching Mikasa at his grave, crying, was just too cruel.

  1. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners

 - image 2

What’s up with all these anime that just love killing the main protagonists at the end? Unfortunately, Cyberpunk is also just like that.

Although we followed David for just 10 episodes, it was enough to relate to him and feel for him. Seeing him go was truly painful. At least Lucy who fulfilled her dream of going to the Moon makes the ending a bit better and brighter.

  1. Code Geass

 - image 3

We don’t care that Lelouch was an antihero, despised by the world in the series. We don’t care that it was all according to his plan, either. No one wanted such a phenomenal character to die like that, and he will be remembered forever.

The fates of Suzaku and C.C. are just as heartbreaking, with one of them becoming Zero and the other one remaining her immortal self, lonely and isolated.

  1. Inuyashiki

 - image 4

An anime where both protagonists die at the end is meant to be even a little bit heartbreaking, and this is exactly the case with Inuyashiki.

But not everything is this upsetting. Hiro managed to undergo a significant character development and even sacrificed his life to save humanity, and Inuyashiki managed to fix a big portion of the issues he was having with his family and died knowing that he was doing the right thing.

  1. Death Note

 - image 5

Perhaps L fans will disagree with this one, but Light stans will understand what we mean.

Light was the heart of Death Note, and no matter how much some hated him, he was a great pleasure to follow. Seeing all of his plans ruined and him lying on the ground and begging someone to save him was just too sad. Deserved, but still sad.

  1. The Promised Neverland (Yakusoku no Neverland)

 - image 6

Although the kids are safe from the demons and are in the human world now, Emma is the part that makes the ending bittersweet.

In exchange for transporting everyone to the other side, the Demon World God asks for Emma’s family. But they are not going to kill her family, as you may think, they will take it away from her.

Emma forgets everything that’s happened and all the time she spent with her family as well as loses any chances at a possible future with them.

  1. Your Lie in April (Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso)

 - image 7

Your Lie in April is notorious for being one of the most heartbreaking anime ever, and its ending is also good at making you cry.

Kousei managed to overcome the trauma of losing his mother and perform again, but Kaori passed away, and all the boy has got is a letter where she finally tells him the truth about her feelings and motives. Don’t know about you, but we get teary-eyed even while typing this.

  1. Parasyte: The Maxim (Kiseijuu: Sei no Kakuritsu)

 - image 8

The evil is defeated, parasites are not a danger to humans anymore, and Shinichi can live a normal and happy life with the girl he loves.

But the thing that makes it bittersweet is Migi. This adorable parasite charmed so many fans that seeing him go and being separated from Shinichi was heartbreaking. Their companionship and, we even dare say, friendship was the heart of the series, and it was sad to say goodbye.

  1. Death Parade

 - image 9

Chiyuki’s story was completely heartbreaking, and learning about how and why she died was tragic and touching. But she finally found her peace and accepted her death.

Decim’s story was also important: he turned from an emotionless arbiter to someone who can emphasize with people. His connection with Chiyuki influenced him a lot and taught him to be better, and we will never forget these two.

  1. Violet Evergarden

 - image 10

Despite Violent experiencing all types of distress and heartbreak, she managed to find it in herself to move on with her life after Gilbert’s death.

A lot happened, but Violet took a lesson from all the events and finally understood what the last words of her Major meant. The ending was absolutely inspirational, but you also can’t help but feel really sad that Violet just had to go through all that.
