A story about two contrasting characters that will definitely touch your soul.
No.6 is an anime adaptation of the novel series of the same name by Atsuko Asano. The 2011 title was produced by Bones, a studio known for My Hero Academia and Fullmetal Alchemist.
The series aired on Fuji Television's legendary NoitaminA block, which was designed to attract young women to anime.
No.6's main audience is female, as the bromance between the main characters has become the reason for the creation of much fan fiction. A manga based on the novel was also published in the shojo magazine Aria.
What Is No.6 About?
A boy named Shion lives with his mother Karan in a dream city – No.6. There is no crime, mutual understanding and harmony reign, and the leadership cares for its citizens. But is everything really so wonderful?
All inhabitants are forced to wear a special bracelet that transmits information about their movements. As the protagonist grows older, he increasingly senses that something is wrong with the metropolis.
One day, during a storm, a boy sneaks into his house, hiding from the Public Security Bureau. Despite the stranger's hostile attitude, Shion helps him heal his wounds and offers him food. It turns out that the young man's name is Nezumi – and the desire to destroy the city rages in his eyes.
No.6 Features Bright and Memorable Characters
Nezumi and Shion are characters whose fates you really feel for. The former is sharp-tongued and carefully hides his weaknesses, trusting no one. He works part-time at the theater and loves to quote Shakespeare.
The second is naive and good-natured, and his kindness seems to illuminate everything around him. At the same time, he can be firm in defending his beliefs.
In addition, the antipodean characters influence each other: Nezumi teaches Shion to fight and not give up, and he shows his friend that the world is not only divided into black and white. Despite their different views on life and people, they form a strong spiritual bond.
No.6 Is an Excellent Representative of the Dystopian Titles of the 2010s
Surprisingly, in an anime with such an alarming atmosphere and an oppressive sense of impending doom, there are also cozy and warm moments. For example, when the characters talk about everything in the basement where Nezumi lives.
The world of No.6 is cold and frightening, but there is room for friendship, love and compassion. It is an excellent dystopia and a wonderful example of the new wave of anime of the 2010s from the NoitaminA block, which was continued by such series as Un-go and Psycho-Pass.
