2001 Hellsing's Ending Explained: What Actually Happened?

2001 Hellsing version diverged from the manga. Can we even figure out the ending?

The old Hellsing series, the 2001 Hellsing series, has a rather contrived plot, which culminates in an ending few people find cohesive or understandable. Here, we will talk or, perhaps, rant about the ending of the original Hellsing series, so beware spoilers.

The final episode has Alucard fighting Incognito. For a moment there, Alucard gets hit by his own bullets, and it proves to be very unpleasant for him, to the point where he cannot immediately respond to Integra lifting his seals. However, the rivers of blood that had been spilled in London and especially in the Tower of London seem to help him get back on his feet.

Later on, Incognito seems to have summoned the god Seth, using Integra's body somehow. Integra's involvement is not very clear, either; one moment, she is being lowered from a falling helicopter by Walter, and next moment she is in the middle of a summoning ring. Eventually, after Alucard ends Incognito apparently by melting a cross into a rod with his white-hot hair, Integra is shown to be incarcerated for some unknown crime, with Alucard offering her immortality.

Between those moments, cards are shown that directly admit that the key plotlines had not received any conclusion, including the one with artificial vampires. However, the cards also claim that some traitor had been found, which implies that Integra might have been framed for treachery. That, at the very least, would explain her incarceration in some dungeon with a pair of the most ineffective handcuffs that seem to be made of cloth. With how seriously she is guarded, they could at least give her full mobility.

The fact that Alucard can make his hair so hot that it melts metal was unexpected, but to be fair, Integra did lift the seal to, apparently, maximum level, which is as good an excuse as any for every possible power being revealed. The fact that he uses the metal rod he creates as a method of impaling Incognito is also a nice touch; it reminds us to read Alucard backwards and remember the impaler.

The police girl proves to be useful by bringing her Master ammunition and also taking care of Integra once she is freed from the summoning ring. She intervenes before Seth is awakened or Alucard's seal is lifted, so she gets badly hurt by Incognito, but she survives.

Overall, nothing truly unexpected happened in that Alucard, obviously, won. But at the same time, so many unexpected and weird things happened that viewers are completely bewildered by this ending. Thus, 2001 Hellsing is not the most cohesive work of fiction. At least the music throughout the final episode is amazing.
