4 Anime Antagonists Who Didn't Get the Punishment They Deserved

These villains never faced the consequences of their deeds.

Spoilers ahead!

Fans often love villains in anime — but what they love even more is when they meet the end they deserve. Unfortunately, that doesn’t always happen. Many anime villains end up not receiving a punishment harsh enough, if any at all.

Some fans blame the fact that anime protagonists often refuse to kill their opponents. Regardless of that, here are some examples of antagonists in anime who deserved way worse punishments than they actually got (if they even got any).

Orochimaru (Naruto)

Orochimaru is probably the best (or worst) example of this trope. His existence and actions directly influenced the Leaf Village on many occasions. He invaded the village, essentially killed the Hokage, tried to murder and kidnap many ninja, as well as performed unethical human experiments.

Throughout the Naruto anime, he couldn’t even stay dead: he actually fully came back after death. What’s worse, however, is the fact that at that point, nobody really cared: the village just allowed him to continue existing instead of putting him down for good.

Hisoka (Hunter x Hunter)

Hunter x Hunter’s Hisoka Morow is one of the most famous characters in the series. A murderous clown who only cares about fighting strong opponents, he showed no issues with killing others whenever he felt like it multiple times.

The protagonists even teamed up with him during the Greed Island Arc. While it’s understandable and actually makes perfect sense for the series — you often can’t choose your allies — fans are still not very happy about him surviving.

Vegeta (Dragon Ball Z)

The Dragon Ball franchise is notable for redeeming its villains. Vegeta is probably the most famous — or infamous — example of that. He is introduced as a cold-blooded killer who has been known to destroy whole planets.

Later in the series, he evolves into an anti-hero ally and then into the secondary protagonist of Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball Super. While he’s great at that role, fans can’t help but wonder why he was let off so easily.

Bondrewd (Made in Abyss)

On the Fifth Layer of The Abyss lies a giant experimental facility of Bondrewd. The man is responsible for many unethical experiments that resulted in deaths — or fates worse than death — for many people, including children. His motivation is research, above anything else, but that doesn’t excuse him: he doesn’t really have any moral qualms over what he does.

While at the end of the Made in Abyss movie, his main body is seemingly destroyed, he continues to live by controlling his underlings. What is perhaps the most unsettling is how the protagonists are suddenly okay with it, too.
