4 Chinese Anime That You Should Watch Now (Don’t Worry, You Can Finish JJK and Frieren First)

China’s got some great projects, too!

Although Chinese animation is not as popular as Japanese anime, it’s attracting more and more fans every day. People usually use the word donghua to talk about Chinese animation to differentiate it from the Japanese one. While some donghua resemble the anime style we are all familiar with, there’s something fresh and unique about them.

So if you’ve already learned what tatakae, isekai or yameru mean, it’s time to start something new and learn a bit of Chinese.

1. Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation (Mo Dao Zu Shi)

This series has become so big that you’ve probably heard about it already. If you’ve been wondering who the two most beautiful men in all of the anime merch you see are, and what series they are from, then this is your answer.

Based on a novel series of the same name, Mo Dao Zu Shi follows Wei Wuxian who was summoned into the body of a madman 13 years after his death. Meanwhile, a severed arm leaking demonic energy is discovered, forcing him to investigate this mystery. The attempts to do so lead him to a person he used to know, Lan Wangji, with whom he is going to start a new journey.

2. Heaven Official's Blessing (Tian Guan Cifu)

Another series, with other beautiful men. Thank you, China, very nice. But seriously, just look at their hair, we’re dying to know what shampoo they both use.

Heaven Official’s Blessing revolves around Xie Lian, who used to be a beloved god and a darling of the world. After being banished to the mortal realm twice, he ascends to the Heavens for the third time. On his first mission he encounters a mysterious man dressed in red who guides him through the forest. Xie Lian is only about to learn that this man is none other than Hua Cheng, a Ghost King feared by many.

3. Link Click (Shiguang Dailiren)

This series’ art style is closer to Japanese anime than the two previous shows, but there’s still something different about it. Cheng Xiaoshi and Lu Guang provide a peculiar service. By using their clients’ photos, they can travel back in time to the moment it was taken, and try to decipher how to solve their client's request. However, it’s not an easy job since any wrong move can ruin the person’s life.

4. Big Fish & Begonia (Da Yu Hai Tang)

This movie gives you great Studio Ghibli vibes. Chun is a little girl and a spirit-like being who has to watch over the mortal realm. While trying to experience the human world by herself, she gets caught in a net and is saved by a boy. The boy ends up drowning, and Chun decides to revive him in exchange for part of her lifespan. However, all choices have consequences, and Chun’s is no exception.
