5 Anime Movies To Watch With Parents

Want to share some love for anime with your parents? But are afraid it might be “too weird”? No worries. Here are some great anime movies that a person of any age might like.

Wolf Children by Mamoru Hosoda

Works of this renowned director tend to be more on the “normal” side of viewing experience. Just like Disney movies, they can provide a decent family time. One of his best movies to do that is Wolf Children. It’s a beautiful coming-of-age story about two siblings — Yuki and Ame, who can turn into wolves. This fantastical side of the story is used as a metaphor to explore the difficulties of growing up and finding your place in the world. A good watch for a cozy, maybe somewhat sentimental evening.

Millennium Actress by Satoshi Kon

Satoshi Kon is another big name in the anime industry. His works tend to be quite surrealistic, but still provide a good story. In Millennium Actress we follow Chiyoko, a now retired actress, who tells the story of her life to two TV reporters — Genya and Kyoji. The movie is far from being just conversations in a room though, as we see all Chiyoko’s memories through the eyes of the reporters — they literally appear as characters in them. It’s a heartfelt story of how our past changes our present and how different people can find a deeper connection through art.

A Silent Voice by Naoko Yamada

This movie was made by Kyoto Animation and it is widely considered to be the studio’s masterpiece. Our main hero is Shōya, a school bully, who meets a deaf girl named Shoko. Through their long and complicated relationship we see a story about a person who finds love for others and for himself. It’s a tender drama that will definitely pull some of your heartstrings. The movie is worth watching for the animation alone. The amount of hard work put into showing all the little details of Shoko’s and Shōya’s hand gestures is incredible.

Cowboy Bebop: The Movie by Shinichiro Watanabe

Despite the fact that this one is a part of a famous anime series, you don’t need any prior knowledge to watch it. The plot is not connected in any way to the main story of the show. Our main characters Spike, Faye, Jet and Edward find themselves on a brand new planet with a brand new villain, not depicted in the show. The story is as good as any episode of the series. And thanks to the animation and well-choreographed fights it is filled with irresistible energy.

Akira by Katsuhiro Otomo

A cult classic, this movie is the one to watch if you want something challenging and thought-provoking. Telling a story of futuristic Japan, it explores the country’s relationship with technology and its post-war mentality. In the 80s, Akira showed millions of people that anime could be more than just entertainment. Maybe it can do the same for your family.
