Of course, we would like a third season of the anime as well.
Watched both seasons of 86 and liked what you’ve seen? Want more of that, but don’t want to read the light novel?
Don’t worry — despite the anime being radically different from many other popular series, it’s not completely unique. Many of its key selling points can be found in other anime — here are some of them.
Both 86 and Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion (Code Geass: Hangyaku no Lelouch) deal with an oppressive society and hardships of war. In both, the government considers those who live in its colony subhuman — both anime deal with discrimination.
They’re both mecha anime, too, and serve as a great introduction to the genre for those yet unfamiliar with it. Both seasons of the anime can be found on Crunchyroll.
Attack on Titan (Shingeki no Kyojin) is similar to 86 on a few levels. First of all, it also features an existential threat to humanity that the protagonists must fight to just survive — and many characters die during the course of the series.
Interestingly enough, Attack on Titan also deals with themes of racism and discrimination in its later seasons — another point of similarity between the two. Also, the OST is similar, as Hiroyuki Sawano composed both — and Kohta Yamamoto was also involved with it in both 86 and AoT Final Season.
Of course, a popular anime like AoT is on Crunchyroll.
Iron-Blooded Orphans
To be fair, most Mobile Suit Gundam (Kidou Senshi Gundam) anime can be considered at least somewhat similar to 86. After all, the horrors of war are the main theme of the franchise.
That said, arguably the one that has the most in common with it is Iron-Blooded Orphans. Similarly to 86, the main cast is discriminated against — and both series feature a lot of drama, relying on a complicated web of relationships.
Depending on your region, Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans can be found on either Crunchyroll or Netflix — we suggest checking both services.
The Sky Crawlers
The Sky Crawlers is a somewhat obscure movie which, just like 86, features a group of characters living on the frontline. Similar to other anime mentioned above, it deals with discrimination and dehumanization.
The movie focuses less on action, exploring the social and psychological effects of the war. While it’s not on any major streaming platforms, it can be rented on Amazon Prime.
While Darling in the FranXX is much less grounded and realistic, it still has a couple of key points that make it similar to 86. These involve mechs, battling against an unknown enemy for humanity’s survival, and complex human drama.
In both, the government also keeps the fighters in the dark — although for completely different reasons. FranXX, like many other modern anime, can be watched on Crunchyroll.
