Spring 2024 might seem like a season full of sequels, where you can't really find any new anime worth watching. However, that's not necessarily true: while there are many worthwhile sequels, there are new series as well — here are some of them.
Kaiju No. 8
Kaiju No. 8 (Kaijuu 8-gou) is one of the biggest hits of Shounen Jump+, the online version of Weekly Shounen Jump. As such, the manga already had quite a steady following, and the anime adaptation was expected for quite a while
The trailer looks good, which makes fans optimistic — the action is definitely the main selling point of the series. However, you should watch it on Crunchyroll: while it will also be broadcast on X (formerly Twitter), the visual quality of that particular release isn't going to be good.
Re:Monster might seem like just another gimmick isekai series to modern viewers. The main character being reincarnated as a goblin doesn't strike most otaku as anything particularly impressive and unusual — we have already had reincarnations into various monsters and even inanimate objects.
What is interesting about this particular series is that it is arguably the one that popularized this trend. The web novel started in 2011, and has been finished for a while. Fans are wondering if the story is going to be fully adapted into multiple seasons, because it very much deserves to be.
Mission: Yozakura Family
Another Shounen Jump series, Mission: Yozakura Family (Yozakura-san Chi no Daisakusen) is often compared to Spy x Family, and not without reason. Both feature comedy and romance with occasional spy action. However, Spy x Family is more of a family sitcom, while Mission: Yozakura Family is a romance/action mix with high schooler characters.
The Fable
One of the most iconic manga of the 2010s, The Fable had a very huge following while it was ongoing. A seinen manga featuring a hitman trying to live a normal life, it balances between cool and hilarious really well. It also has the vibe of something from the 70s or 80s, which is something older fans look forward to.
The manga for The Fable is quite long — 240 chapters — and fans wonder if this series as well can get multiple seasons.
The new Spice and Wolf (Ookami to Koushinryou) series is not a sequel. It is a remake, made to cover the material the original anime skipped. While there are debates over if it was needed in the first place, the remake is being done with respect to the original series, and is aimed to capture both new and old audiences.
The next season is shaping up to be very good.
