5 Anime to Watch While Waiting for the New Mushoku Tensei Episode

Not all of these are isekai.

The second cour of Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation (Mushoku Tensei: Isekai Ittara Honki Dasu) is coming out right now. While the anime is certainly controversial, it has its fair share of fans — and for many of them, watching one episode a week is not enough.

So, here are some series that might substitute Mushoku Tensei while you’re waiting for another episode.

Frieren

MyAnimeList score: 9.37

Frieren: Beyond Journey's End (Sousou no Frieren) isn’t even an isekai, but it’s impossible to not mention it when talking about good fantasy anime.

Despite the controversial content in Mushoku Tensei, it’s hard to deny that during the slice-of-life moments, it has an amazing fantasy atmosphere. And during the action scenes, it looks epic — and music helps, too. What other great recent show has all of that (minus isekai, minus controversial content)? Frieren, of course.

Re:Zero

MyAnimeList score: 8.66

If you simply want a good isekai series, Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World- (Re:Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu) is the go-to recommendation, and for a good reason.

In addition to a very entertaining story full of mysteries, it also shows the progress of the main character. He starts out as a complete loser, and evolves into a much more heroic person — the whole point of the series is Subaru becoming a good person.

Ascendance of a Bookworm

MyAnimeList score: 7.99

While it has a somewhat different audience, Ascendance of a Bookworm (Honzuki no Gekokujou: Shisho ni Naru Tame ni wa Shudan wo Erandeiraremasen) is still not a bad recommendation to Mushoku Tensei.

It’s another series where the protagonist starts a new life in a fantasy world as a child. Though, in the case of Ascendance of a Bookworm, it’s a female protagonist, and she isn’t reborn as a baby. The anime is also slow-paced, and if you like the slice-of-life elements of Mushoku Tensei, you might enjoy this one.

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime

MyAnimeList score: 8.14

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime (Tensei shitara Slime Datta Ken) is, essentially, power fantasy done right. The protagonist is overpowered, but not terribly so — and it has enough action for action fans and enough dialogues for those who don’t care about it.

It’s just a really well-done isekai series, and it’s long enough to also have a potential to be an epic story.

Oshi no Ko

MyAnimeList score: 8.66

You might ask “so, what do Oshi no Ko and Mushoku Tensei have in common, exactly?”. And yes, Oshi no Ko isn’t even a fantasy series — and definitely not an isekai — but the two are more similar than you might think.

Both are reincarnation-series, where the protagonist restarts his life as a baby — and in both cases, this gives them a completely different outlook at life. They both also were deeply troubled people in their first lives: neither is a redemption story, but both are about getting another chance.
