The official site for Spice & Wolf: merchant meets the wise wolf dropped a second teaser visual on Monday along with the season 2 window: 2027. Passione is animating again, and Kevin Penkin is back on the score.

The first season aired for two consecutive cours from April 2024 and streamed on Crunchyroll, sub and dub, as a full restart of Isuna Hasekura's light novels rather than a continuation of the 2008 anime.

The staff coming back

  • Takeo Takahashi returns as chief director, with Hijiri Sanpei, who directed season one.
  • Nobuyoshi Nagayama (Smile Down the Runway) and Takahiro Majima direct season two at Passione.
  • Koji Haneda (The Faraway Paladin) is back on character designs with Rina Sugimoto.
  • Kevin Penkin (Made in Abyss, Tower of God) composes again.
  • Also announced: Tomoko Koyama on color design, Morihito Ohara on art setting, Kazuhiro Inoue as art director, Yuki Okada on photography, Ayako Tan editing.

Why the cast list matters here

Jun Fukuyama and Ami Koshimizu reprised Kraft Lawrence and Holo for the 2024 reboot, sixteen years after the original series — a continuity almost nothing else in anime has. Mai Nakahara also returned as Norah Arendt. Nothing in Monday's announcement suggests that changes.

For anyone who has not read the novels: a travelling merchant finds a wolf goddess asleep in his cart. She is bored of watching over harvests, wants to go north, and offers him her instincts for business in exchange for the ride. The show is mostly the two of them talking about currency debasement, and it is genuinely thrilling.

A 2027 window on a series that ran two cours in 2024 is a normal gap by modern standards. The unusual part is that the same director, the same studio, the same composer and the same two leads are all still attached.

No cour, no month, no episode count yet — just 2027 and a new visual.
