5 Anime With as Many (or Even More) Character Deaths Than Jujutsu Kaisen

Yes, Season 2 had many casualties — but there could have been even more.

Major spoilers ahead!

Some fans felt that the Shibuya Incident Arc in Jujutsu Kaisen killed off too many characters. Despite that, it’s not actually that uncommon for an anime to feature that many deaths.

If for some reason you want something similar to that — or even more brutal — in scale, here are some series. Don’t say we didn’t warn you, though.

Akame ga Kill!

Before Jujutsu Kaisen, Akame ga Kill! was known as a kill-them-all anime. The series is known for its cast of colorful and memorable characters — who, one by one, suffer memorable and brutal deaths.

The anime actually differs significantly from the manga, and is much more brutal. That said, watching it with friends and betting on who is going to die in the next episode is fun in its own way.

Attack on Titan

Honestly, if you think Jujutsu Kaisen was brutal to its characters — remember how ruthless its world is.

That is even more prominent in another modern classic, Attack on Titan (Shingeki no Kyojin), which also killed off most of its named characters. And that doesn’t even include most of the humanity perishing The Rumbling.

Magical Girl Raising Project

Dark takes on the magical girls genre have been pretty popular ever since Puella Magi Madoka Magica (Mahou Shoujo Madoka★Magica) came out.

Magical Girl Raising Project (Mahou Shoujo Ikusei Keikaku) takes that to a logical extreme — introducing a huge character cast and killing most of it off in a battle royale type setting. And it gets even more insane in the light novels.

Fafner

Fafner (Soukyuu no Fafner: Dead Aggressor), also known as Fafner in the Azure, is a mecha franchise spanning multiple seasons and movies across almost 20 years. It was extremely popular back in the 00s, but is less known now. One of the original selling points was how depressingly realistic the series was.

The main characters in Fafner rarely die (but that also happens). However, that doesn’t apply to the secondary characters: almost every one of them who is introduced will die at some point, and fans were somewhat bewildered that the series still had characters to kill off in the latest movies.

Space Runaway Ideon

Space Runaway Ideon (Densetsu Kyojin Ideon) is a series by Yoshiyuki Tomino, who is known for the Mobile Suit Gundam (Kidou Senshi Gundam) franchise. Tomino has gone through multiple periods of depression over his life, which is reflected in his anime as well — and Ideon is by far the most depressing one.

Ideon doesn’t end with just the entire cast being killed off — the entire humanity is wiped out. As well as most of the galaxy. Even Tomino himself feels like he went overboard with that one. That said, Ideon was a major inspiration point for Neon Genesis Evangelion… and we can certainly see how.
